Biography

I was born in Barking, Essex on the eastern fringes of London on a Saturday in the 1960s when Spurs lost. [1] My lovely Dad never let me forget that.

I had an idyllic childhood full of trees, bikes, football and mud. Parents who were encouraging but not pushy. They opened our eyes to what was possible.

I grew up in Barking, but knew that once I had left London to go to medical school, I would never be going back. A chance interview took me to Nottingham for a 12 month post at the City Hospital, and 25 years later I'm still here.

Our family were dockers in the London docks living in squalid poverty a hundred years ago. My parents were the first generation to have a university education (albeit as mature students) and their own house. Me and my sister are standing on the shoulders of giants, our East End forebears who could see what was possible if we believed and were prepared to keep at it.

Research and Stuff

My genealogy research started in earnest after Mum died in 2002 (her funeral was on the day that England went out to Brazil in the World Cup [2]). Dad had always wondered where his Fitz-Henry roots came from. We never did find out while he was still alive. Even now he is gone, his DNA pattern is still there at FamilyTreeDNA waiting for that elusive Y-DNA match. Thank you for that Dad.

I co-ordinate the Fitzhenry and Fitzharris One Name Study at the Guild of One Name Studies (study number 4389). I'm also one of the Regional Reps for Nottinghamshire, even though Notts is one of the most Fitz-Henry-less places in the UK.

I have been tracing my own Fitz-Henry family for nearly 20 years, and have traced many other disconnected Fitzhenry and Fitzharris branches along the way. Mine are distinctly unhelpful in leaving clues to their origins, but the DNA pattern points to links to the Fitzhenry/Fitzharris families from County Wexford rather than the genetically distinct family from County Galway.

I also co-ordinate the Fitzhenry / Fitzharris DNA study at FamilyTreeDNA (Y testers and autosomal testers welcome!).

If you have taken an autosomal DNA test and you have the Fitzhenry or Fitzharris name in your family, please get in touch and let's see what we can find.

Many thanks to my wonderful network of Fitzhenry and Fitzharris contacts around the world, and especially Gretta Browne of Clonroche, County Wexford without who I wouldn't have got half as far as I have with it all.

After one frenetic year on WT, and new to genealogy at age 77, I had the good fortune this week to mistakenly attribute possible knighthood to a half first cousin 2x removed. He was active in early WWI secret services. In rode "England WT sheriff" (i.e. data doctor) to clarify that DSO + MBE does not equal knighting, and it's not covertly awarded. Not just resting on that correction, Jo sourced my profile with GRO data, days after I'd first heard of GRO records. This equals the day I was made aware of the WikiTreeSourcer by the kind Palatine Migration Project ship committee lead, Virginia Holtzman!

Hello, Would you happen to know why Thomas Dunn was granted the acreage in Essex County, Virginia by Sir George Yeardley or where I could find this out? Thank you.

Thomas Dunn is managed by the Virginia Project (I was only commenting on this profile previously as he had been linked to the wrong family in England ). If you leave your question as a comment on Thomas' profile it will get picked up by the Virginia Project and anyone else who has an interest in him. You could also ask the question on the profile of Sir George Yeardley. Thanks, Jo

Hi Jo,

I wanted to fix a broken link on the profile for Nicholas Spicer, Spicer-1895, but have stumbled across the pre-1700 certification, which requires, among other things, that I reach out to a project co-ordinator to check that there is no duplicate. The link I wish to edit is to the Royal Albert Museum and Art Gallery, who have updated their website, making the old link on this profile break. As the rules on source validity stand, the RAMM is not deemed a reliable source. Would we be able to add that as a reliable source, given its scholarly context? Many thanks, Emma

The profile isn't an England Project Managed Profile, so the best thing would be to liaise with the current profile manager regarding updating the link. The RAMM link is to the portrait so it is not a source per se, but still valid. The profile could do with inline sourcing and a general tidy. The burial place of "Alderman Burt" is probably St Mary Aldermanbury.

Hi Jo,

It looks like we are distant relatives about 5cm. I am closer to 4th to 6th cousins with many other Pettus and Ragland. Do you know much about a George Pettus, Virginia?

Jo Fitz-Henry
Hello Tom - that would be very distant indeed at 5cM! I'm no relation (that I know of) to the Pettuses, they were an untangling project in my capacity as an England Project coordinator as 5 years ago their trees were in such a mess on both sides of the Atlantic. I still have a lot of the English ones on my watchlist to keep them on the straight and narrow. If your George Pettus was not an emigrant from England, then I probably won't know anything about him, but send me his WikiTree ID and I will see if I have worked on him.

Cheers, Jo

Hi Beryl, it's the son of William Gage 2nd Baronet Gage of Hengrave. Neither he, nor his wife, nor his two sons (who were the 3rd and 4th Baronets) have profiles yet. The wife is Delariviere D'Ewers.

This is a different branch of the Gage family Beryl. The Thomas who became the first Viscount is well documented to be the son of Joseph of Sherborn, Oxfordshire. Probably privately baptised in a Catholic ceremony and hence why his birthdate is not known. We will take a look at who this Thomas son of Sir John is. Edit: he was the Thomas who became the 6th Baronet Gage of Firle and died in 1713, he hasn't got a profile yet. I will create one for him, and his older brother John (5th Bt) and younger brother William (7th Bt). When William died in 1744, this Thomas Gage-1038 (a cousin) became the 8th baronet.

This is in appreciation of the great communications you use when communicating with profile managers to clear up / present details you has found while researching for the England and PGM Projects.

You posted a comment that identified what you had found, the suggestion you had for me to correct it, and what additional steps you was going to take for other profiles in that family.

The wording was clear, polite, kind and helpful in tone. It gave me exactly what I needed to take action in a timely and timesaving way.

Bravo, Jo Fitz-Henry!! You put a smile on my face!

Thanks again! I definitely look forward to any messages you may may send me as profile manager or as Bartlett Name Study Coordinator. -Sherry Bartlett
