Motivation
[edit]From June 1999 until the arrival in 2003 of Pan European Game Information (Q192916), the SELL (Q3508314) rated the content of video games in France. Jean-Fred (talk) 08:45, 24 April 2026 (UTC)

Comment Where are those ratings sourced from? Matthias M. (talk) 19:12, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, this is somewhat tough, as there is no database I know of of SELL ratings. Relying on box-arts is not ideal. However, based on what I could find just now:
- some third-party databases will have that information ; for example Nintendo64EVER (Q109589665) has it ; see eg https://www.nintendo64ever.com/Nintendo-64-Game-Data-Sheet,4,_.html. There might not be many others − some DBs seem to only display PEGI (which I assume was remapped / retroactively assigned) − for example Planète-Aventure uses the PEGI-16 logo for De Sang Froid, whose boxart makes it clear it was Déconseillé aux moins de 16 ans ; Gamekult states that Donkey Kong 64 is PEGI 3, but PEGI did not exist back then. So, probably a bit hit and miss
- some magazines mention it. Searching through http://retromagazinesearch.uliege.be, I found some traces in Gen4 (Q3100340) (example 1, example 2), Kids Mania (example), PlayGuide. Astuces mania (example) Not much, but that should do it. Jean-Fred (talk) 09:38, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
- What, you think the box art is lying? Trade (talk) 20:22, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
- Not lying per se, but:
- box-arts are primary sources, and I prefer to use secondary sources whenever possible.
- box-arts as uploaded to say GameFAQs or MobyGames are essentially user-generated content, and in theory there’s no guarantee the user did not doctor the box-art (in practice, I don’t really buy that myself either :) Box-arts as uploaded to Canonical Specialized Platform Fan Database ranks higher in my book though (because presumably it’s mostly done by a group of trusted "expert" editors)
- I’m not sure we can count on always finding box-arts − when searching for examples, even for fairly "blockbusters" that came to mind, I could not necessarily find on the Internet the back-cover of the French release where the SELL rating would be − it’s somewhat niche after all.
- Just some personal thoughts, none of which are dealbreakers ; but I’ll stand by my "not ideal" :) Jean-Fred (talk) 13:31, 7 May 2026 (UTC)

Support Pfew, ça ne nous rajeunit pas! But yes, SELL ratings are in scope just like PEGI or any other rating systems we have. Thanks for proposing! Jean-Fred (talk) 08:45, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
