Greater intake of carbohydrates (=200g/day) is also related to higher chances of
cortical cataract. Looking at our Ghanaian staple, it is crucial to eat not just the right amounts, but also the right types of carbohydrates, because high-glycemic-index foods are associated with an increased prevalence of AMD, and of nuclear and
cortical cataract.
A
cortical cataract starts in the periphery of the lens and works its way inward to the center.
Localized central
cortical cataract was observed around intralenticular cilia, which was embedded at its bulb and protruded into the anterior chamber (figure 1).
Preoperative conventional slit lamp microscopy showed the different types of cataracts: eight eyes were
cortical cataract, 14 eyes were nuclear cataract, and nine eyes were posterior subcapsular cataract.
Patients diagnosed as senile
cortical cataract (pearly white opacity) by slit lamp examination were taken as cases who were attending the OPD of Department of Ophthalmology in Kamineni Hospital, LB Nagar, Hyderabad.
Posterior sub-capsular, posterior polar and
cortical cataract types were noted in 25(4.6%), 30(5.6%) and 12(2.7%) patients respectively.
These data suggest that LSS and lanosterol change with the increase of opacity of lens in ARCC, indicating that LSS pathway plays a protective role in
cortical cataract.
A strong relationship between UV radiation exposure and the eyelid cancers basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, photokeratitis, climatic droplet keratopathy, pterygium and
cortical cataract development has been found, while the relationship between UV radiation and pinguecula, nuclear and posterior subcapsular cataract, ocular surface squamous neoplasia, ocular melanoma and age-related macular degeneration is limited.
Cortical cataract was the most common type found in 25 (50%) cases followed by posterior subcapsular cataract in 14 (28%) and total cataract in 11 (22%) cases.
For example, smoking is associated with increased risk of nuclear cataract, diabetes with
cortical cataract, and steroid medications with posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC).
Cataract and type of cataract were graded from digital lens images using the Lens Opacity Classification System HI (LOCS ID), and cataract was classified from the grade in the worse eye of [greater than or equal to] 4 for nuclear cataract, [greater than or equal to] 3 for
cortical cataract, and [greater than or equal to] 2 for posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC).
