While such discussions might have been dismissed elsewhere, the authors here are titans of business and technology thinking: John Hagel III is a former McKinsey & Co consultant who wrote the best-selling dot-com era tomes, Net Value, Net Worth and Net Gain; John Seely Brown headed Xerox's famous Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) for over a decade - the R&D facility that pioneered - yet failed to exploit - groundbreaking inventions such as the graphical user interface, the
bit-mapped display and mouse, object-oriented programming and countless printer and document technologies.
A generous number of black-and-white photographs accompany each article; most are of high quality except for a few
bit-mapped images.
A software program to enable display, storage in a
bit-mapped format, enlargement, and reduction of these images was developed and is offered on the Web.
Also, there are server technologies that may speed up query and reporting processing but slow down transaction processing (e.g.,
bit-mapped indexing), and server technologies that may speed up transaction processing but slow down query and report processing (e.g., technology for transaction recovery.).
This is a problem with
bit-mapped graphics embedded into text and it is not a consistent problem.
A graphical layout tool allows "drag and drop" editing so that text, charts, documents, logos, and
bit-mapped images can be included in reports.
"We're limited to crappy
bit-mapped text," says Dan Roam, vice president of creative strategy at Circle.com.
Omnidex also uses
bit-mapped indexes for very high-speed instant counts, keyword searches and similar types of queries.
The document's appearance gets captured as a raster image in the manner usually associated with document imaging software; a
bit-mapped image comprised of detailed black dots on a white background is produced, usually as a tagged image format (TIF) file.
Also, a frame of footage can be printed out and
bit-mapped for closer inspection or enlargement.
