Summary:
Binge eating can have the behavioural characteristics of substance addiction
A recent study identified new brain circuits that may act as a brake on
binge eating and junk food craving.
It is important to examine potential links between binge-eating disorder and food insecurity because
binge eating is associated with more severe mental and physical health problems than overeating or obesity alone.
The affect regulation model proposes that
binge eating behaviors alleviate unpleasant emotions and are thus negatively reinforced in the long term (Polivy and Herman, 1993).
The medical school of the UNC is preparing to undertake a study called BEGIN, which stands for
Binge Eating Genetics INitiative, in whichresearchers will observe people with
binge eating disorder who often eat large amounts of food uncontrollably in a small period of time.
IANS | San Francisco A team of researchers in the US is set to use Apple iPhone and Watch to track
binge eating disorder among people.
It outlines three categories of skills--mindfulness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance--and explains how emotions and
binge eating are connected, the biological and environmental factors involved, how to make a commitment to stop
binge eating, the programAEs goals and tools, learning to become one's own coach, the benefits of dialectical thinking and mindfulness, becoming a more skillful observer, staying on track, the skills of mindful eating and urge surfing, being mindful of emotions and accepting them, reducing vulnerability to emotion, building positive experiences, the skills of distress tolerance, and reviewing, planning for the future, and preventing relapse.
Another significant modification related to the classification of eating and food intake disorders is the recognition of
binge eating disorder (BED) as comparable to anorexia and bulimia nervosa, in other words, it is no longer considered a diagnostic category for research.
|ANOREXIA NERVOSA - when you try to keep your weight as low as possible by not eating enough food, exercising too much, or both BULIMIA - when you sometimes lose control and eat a lot of food in a very short amount of time (binging) and are then deliberately sick, use laxatives (medication to help you poo), restrict what you eat or do too much exercise to try to stop yourself gaining weight |BINGE EATING DISORDER (BED) - when you regularly lose control of your eating, eat large portions of food all at once until you feel uncomfortably full, and are then often upset or guilty OTHER SPECIFIED FEEDING OR EATING DISORDER (OSFED) - when your symptoms don't exactly match those of anorexia, bulimia or
binge eating disorder, but it doesn't mean it's a less serious illness
There is however a distinct difference between a very occasional episode of overindulgence and repeated
binge eating. According to Mayo Clinic,
binge eating is characterised by frequently consuming large amounts of food, regardless of your appetite.
