A Se'nnight of Steyn: May 24-30
We are happy to share that Mark is doing much better. We will continue to update the SteynOnline community as we receive news. But in the meantime, we wanted to share some of the memories and comments shared with us based on this week's columns: In the 1960's, my Dad worked for an electronics design firm creating antennas for space flight. I'd hang around reading the next "Aviation Week and Space Technology" which covered all things both civilian and military. Each one was thick and packed with all sorts of technology. Since then, the magazine has thinned. – Robert Bridges, The (New But) Lost Frontier Mark can take the most, simple of stories and open up its universe of meanings and histories like no one else. I always love the little bits of "you are there" as well when Mark says "Jule Steyn, who... told me years ago..." I saw "South Pacific" as a 13-year-old at the famous summer revival at Lincoln Center in 1967 with Florence Henderson and Giorgio Tozzi himself. Rodgers supervised the production (like I knew who that was). I was in a seat somewhere on the Jersey side of the Hudson, but it is a clarifying image for me that brought home all the showtunes et al that my mom loved and instilled in me and my sister throughout childhood. I considered myself one of the luckiest people on the planet (never envisioning anyone from our Queens family would ever see a Broadway play). And the last, perhaps greatest thing, with this old review by Mark is that I cannot wait to refer to my upcoming retirement posture as being "rallentando." – Chris M., Some Enchanted Evening My humble suggestion for a good children's book is Richard Halliburton's "The Complete Book of Marvels". I read it when I was about 12 and it is still on the bookshelf. – Impartial Observer, A Change in Schedule Funny how things just happen. I'm listening to Marks audio tonight with the TV volume low. Was watching the first season of Band of Brothers. While Mark plays The Battle Hymn of the Republic, the soldiers in BoB are singing the same melody, with slightly different lyrics."Glory, glory what a hell of a way to die". Love coincidences. – Nick Bradley, The Swallows Skim, and All is Hushed Tal, Welcome back to SteynOnline! Will you be joining us this October for our remake of The Odyssey, starring Mark Steyn as Odysseus, aboard the Queen Mary 2? It's bound to be a more interesting voyage than whatever Christopher Nolan is serving up. Please bring your lyre or that other stringed instrument you play. – Glen Flint, A Odyssey to Ignore? This week, we've welcomed Tal Bachman back to SteynOnline, and featured some Mark classics from years gone by. Full roundup below! ~ The story behind "Some Enchanted Evening" was this past week's Steyn's Song of the Week. If you missed it, you can read Mark's column here. ~ Monday, we paid homage to the fallen and the origins of Memorial Day with Mark's The Swallows Skim, and All is Hushed. ~ Tuesday's Topical Take featured Mark's look back at what is both the lost and new frontier as we head into an AI-driven world. ~ We had a swap-a-roo on Wednesday and Thursday – with two days of Laura Rosen Cohen – featuring Links on Wednesday and Clubland Q&A on Thursday. ~ Tal Bachman made his return to SteynOnline Friday, with some advice for all readers on which blockbuster to miss this summer (hint: it rhymes with oddity, kind of). Thank you for your many kind messages regarding Mark's health. We have been able to share some of them with him - which has really lifted his spirits. He has made tremendous progress this week and looks forward to being back as soon as possible. I hope Mark is actually just recharging his batteries anonymously on some tropical island, like James Bond in Skyfall, having completed his mission From Ukraine With Love, and will make his return to save the day. – (Appropriately signed) M Thanks Mark, it can't be easy being the guy pointing out the emperor has got no clothes on all the time. I'm truly grateful for all of your work, long may it continue. Wishing you a speedy recovery. – Stuart A. I'm in Budapest this week. If Mark is in hospital here and wants a visit (grapes and magazine?) let me know... – Ketil H. (Sadly, Ketil, no, he is not in Budapest) May God bless Mark! – Richard B. And this to close out the week from Nicola T.: Well, no new Steyn but Duke Ellington, Victor Hubert and Sinatra great compensation. And Alley Cat a tune I loved as a kid! While Mark has been out, we've had a few guest hosts with more to come this week: ~ The week began with Steyn's Song of the Week featuring Mark's conversation with Ann Ronell (of "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" fame) on Serenade Radio. The special presentation, from way back when, can be enjoyed here. ~ On Monday, Melissa provided an update on the latest Ofcom investigation (is that the right word) and the tweetings of Michael Mann in Transitioning to Truth. ~ As rumors swirled about Sir Keir's imminent resignation (he's still holding on as of this writing), Steyn HQ re-upped Mark's Britain on the Brink (Part Deux), providing Mark's analysis on why Starmer is now facing no confidence. ~ Clubland Q&A this week was guest hosted by our own, very fabulous and lovely, Laura Rosen Cohen. Laura fielded questions about Iran, Israel, Canada, the UK, and AI (will AI replace the arts and human creativity? Laura thinks not). ~ Laura was back with her regular round-up of links on Thursday, which was chock-full of news, including old Jewish sayings, Sharia law, rising antisemitism, and a prayer for Martin Short and his family. ~ With Cuba in the news, Friday brought Mark's 2016 retrospective on Fidel Castro, with Mark turning a phrase as only Mark can:
~ Mark Steyn on the Town featured one of Mark's first programs on Serenade Radio. Listen here (and read his responses to reader comments). ~ The week ended with Rick on his long-delayed wedding trip, so Steyn HQ shared Mark's conversation with Celeste Holm, which among other topics includes one of our favorite movies of all time, High Society, over at Mark at the Movies. Miss Mark? Haven't read America Alone (shame!)? Then listen to Mark's narration of the best-selling book here. For those of you who have not yet joined the Mark Steyn Club, or if your membership has lapsed, you can sign-up/re-up here. All Aboard! Join today! Meanwhile, in case you missed it, here's how the last seven days looked at SteynOnline: ~ In Steyn's Song of the Week, Mark traced the history of a very distinctive song from the twilight of the Habsburg Empire to the twilight of disco via an especially pitiful act of rock karaoke and the loss of the word "gigolette". ~ On Monday, Mark gave an update on the state of the war. ~ In Tuesday's Notebook, he pondered what is said - and what isn't. ~ Mark was back behind the Clubland Q&A microphone on Wednesday - live from Transcarpathia - fielding questions from Mark Steyn Club members around the planet on Iran, Gorsuch's unoriginal ideas, the mid-terms, dogs in Ukraine and more. Happy Sunday! Our birthday preparations are underway as we look forward to starting our tenth year with so many of our steadfast members this week. When we started this club, we were building a boat that literally kept us from drowning under legal terrorism by a psycho billionaire demanding silence. Mark endured. Today, the boat the club built keeps everything afloat as Mark continues to defend free speech - on one of the most important issues of the day. As he observed just the other day, it is his goal:
Amen. Mark has survived the "human rights" commissions in Canada, fake conservative outlet grifters, and fourteen years of ongoing lawfare by the execrable Mann. If anyone thinks a few malicious comments will cause him to stop speaking the uncomfortable truth and slink away or retire, they are seriously deluded. We thank the overwhelming majority of members - including those who have sent private messages of encouragement - who have stuck with the club - including: Arizona
Manitoba
Tennessee
Virginia
Welcome and thank you to all our new, renewing and returning members from Alabama, Alberta, Arizona, British Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Essex, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Lancashire, London, Kansas, Manitoba, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Ontario, Pembrokeshire, Pennslyvania, South Gloucestershire, Surrey, Tennessee, Texas, Victoria, Virginia, Yorkshire, and beyond. As readers will have likely heard by now, yet another attempt was made on President Trump's life - this time at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Mark has much to say about it here. If the democrats were not so determined to obstruct Trump on every single thing - even things he's uniquely qualified to accomplish, such as building a ballroom - there might be a proper venue in which to host large gatherings. Having attended events at the White House in the past, I concur wholeheartedly with Amy Poehler's observation that the place is "janky". I would add that the rooms are "pokey". For instance, the State Dining Room can only seat 140 guests - and that's with 14 people on tables meant for ten. I will be curious to see where they host King Charles III on Tuesday - big tents on a muddy lawn doesn't sound terribly secure or dignified... UPDATE - at least one democrat is making sense:

Mark will be back this morning with his ongoing audio adaptation of his bestselling book America Alone: The End of the World As We Know It. In case you missed it, here's last week's episode of America Alone. Clubbers may catch up on all episodes here. On Monday, the DC Court of Appeals notified us that they have lifted the stay in Mann vs Steyn - which means we are now full steam ahead for the next phase of this case brought almost fourteen years ago. Michael E. Mann will do anything to silence his critics - from vile sexual defamations against female scientists to false evidence presented under oath to an already biased DC jury. If you've followed the case, you'll know that one million dollar verdict against Mark was reduced to a mere $5k - and - Mann was sanctioned and fined by the judge for lying to the jury. Mann's appeal of these two decisions have no merit - and practically zero chance of success - but he will continue the case because he has no skin in the game. In fact, he testified in court that he has not paid any legal fees whatsoever. That is not the case for Mark - who will be forced to come up with thousands more in the coming weeks - to defend himself - and free speech. That is why we are so grateful to you - our clubbers - for standing by Mark including our new, renewing and returning members from Alabama, Alberta, Arizona, Arkansas, Australian Capital Territory, British Columbia, Buckinghamshire, California, Cambridgeshire, Columbia, Connecticut, Devon, Essex, Florida, France, Georgia, Guernsey, Hertfordshire, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ireland, Israel, Kent, Kentucky, Leicestershire, London, Louisiana, Luxembourg, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New South Wales, New York, Norfolk, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Ontario, Oregon, Oxfordshire, Quebec, Somerset, South Australia, South Carolina, Switzerland, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Victoria, Virginia, Washington, Western Australia, West Midlands, West Yorkshire, Wisconsin, and beyond.
