The FPC’s Media Co-operative program (“Media Co-ops”) are custom-tailored, collaborative, international media productions facilitated by the U.S. Department of State. These Media Co-ops bring foreign journalists — typically a two-person team consisting of a producer/reporter and a videographer — to the United States for up to nine days to create compelling visual content.  Through on-location reporting, Media Co-ops advance U.S. foreign policy priorities with news productions designed specifically for international audiences.

Media Co-ops go “beyond the soundbite,” offering journalists unparalleled, first-person access to U.S. policymakers at all levels, as well as private sector leaders, academics, civil society representatives and other subject matter experts. These on-the-record engagements provide deeper insights in U.S. foreign policy issues and the broader social, political, economic, and cultural contexts in which policies are shaped.  The programs result in diverse media products, including social media content, print articles, radio and TV broadcasts, features and documentaries.

U.S. embassies nominate journalists and develop a program proposal that focuses on opportunities to explore key U.S. policies in depth.  Once selected, a U.S.-based contract producer coordinates all aspects of the journalists’ reporting and logistic needs while in the United States, with oversight from the FPC. They ensure access to people and places foreign journalists might not otherwise reach.

Journalists are expected to adhere to recognized standards of journalistic ethics and integrity while participating in the program and return home at the conclusion of the planned travel.

While the FPC provides access to authoritative American information sources, the FPC does not review, approve, censor or otherwise influence the editorial content produced through the program. The FPC remains committed to supporting unbiased, transparent access to information and support media freedom as a pillar of democracy.
