Super Smash Bros. Duel Zone

Duel Zone (デュエルゾーン, Duel Zone),[1] also known as Battlefield or the Fighting Polygon Stage,[citation needed] is a stage in Super Smash Bros., home to the Fighting Polygon Team in the 1P Game.

Stage overview[edit]

Duel Zone in a hacked VS Game.

Like its successors, it features a large main platform with three overhanging soft platforms. It's overall smaller than the Melee and Brawl versions, and also lacks Melee's infamous ledges on its main platform. It also has a higher ceiling than its Melee counterpart. The only way to use the stage for a multiplayer match is through hacking.

Nomenclature[edit]

The name Duel Zone comes from the game's Japanese website, where it is called デュエルゾーン, a transliteration of the English "Duel Zone".[1] But the existence of this source was not known for many years, and there was no source for any English name at the time, as it cannot be selected in-game and thus has no name displayed. Upon the release of Super Smash Bros. Melee having a stage with the same layout and gameplay purpose called Battlefield (戦場, Battlefield), the name "Battlefield" came to be retroactively applied to this stage. Even after the knowledge of the Duel Zone name became more widespread, the "Battlefield" name remains common.

Eventually, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate provided reasonably strong evidence that Duel Zone is the stage's official name in English, as its music is named "Duel Zone". It also suggests that Duel Zone is not considered the same stage as the Battlefield of later games: while the event tournament Hailing from the '90s features Final Destination, it does not feature Battlefield, whereas The Year Is 200X does. This implies the developers see the Battlefield stage as having debuted in Melee, and that Duel Zone is not one of them.

Tournament legality[edit]

The stage is generally banned in competitive play: besides the fact that it needs a hacking device to be accessed, there is also a glitch where characters are automatically KO'd if they Smash DI into the stage. However, some tournaments that use specialized rulesets (such as GENESIS 5 and GENESIS 6) allow the stage as a legal counterpick stage for doubles, provided that the glitch has been fixed.

Trivia[edit]

  • This is the only Battlefield that is not a playable stage in VS Mode without hacking.
