As Ableton expand their Link protocol to audio, is the zero‑configuration wireless studio finally here?
For exactly a decade, Ableton Link has enabled synchronisation between multiple Live instances over a network, offering a more robust alternative to MIDI Clock. However, users have always been tethered to audio cables to actually share sound. Until now.
The Live 12.4 beta, released in February 2026, brings a variety of updates: there are refreshes to classic devices (Erosion, Delay, Chorus‑Ensemble), improvements to Stem Separation, and a new Learn View. But the most architecturally significant is Link Audio, which enables users to send audio from one device to another — wirelessly.
Link Audio uses Wi‑Fi or a local area network (LAN) to create a wireless audio bus with automatic latency compensation. This allows computers running Live 12.4 (Mac/Windows), Push 3, Move and iOS Note devices to share audio. Setup is simple: enable Link and Link Audio in Settings, create a new audio track on the receiving device, then set its ‘Audio From’ to the external device, select the desired channel, turn ‘Monitor’ on, and — and you’re done. (One note: ensure ‘Local Network’ is switched for Ableton in the computer’s settings — this caught me out for a short while!)
Once a link is established, you could use a Move unit to generate a drum track and send its audio wirelessly into a laptop running Live. Or two performers could be running their own instances of Live, with just one acting as the ‘main mix’ environment. A Move or Note running soft synths could feed directly into a desktop session, or a standalone unit could act as an input stage. Any number of configurations are possible, depending on need.
Link Audio provides a simple solution, removing all that complexity.
This is a distinct improvement on traditional networked audio solutions, which typically require virtual audio drivers, additional hardware or specialist solutions. These work, but aren’t exactly frictionless. Latency must be managed manually, and routing quickly becomes an exercise in technical jiggery‑pokery. Link Audio provides a simple solution, removing all that complexity.
