Tony Soprano juggles the problems of his fractious family with those of a "Family" of a different sort - the mob. He sees a therapist to deal with his professional and personal problems, which bring on panic attacks. He deals with personal and professional power struggles, affairs, violence, the threat of exposure and betrayal, and a whole bunch of people being whacked.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

America's first crime family bows out in a chilling cut to black during a meditative final season that is debatably cruel to audience expectations but wholly committed to its thematic integrity.

The Sopranos came up with an ending just as murky and disorienting as the 85 hours that led up to it. Rather than betray its ethos by bowing to convention, The Sopranos went out on its own terms. Go to Full Review
Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe 06/21/2018
Rather than an ending that would stop the conversation about Tony Soprano, Chase gave us an ending that will keep us talking. Go to Full Review
Jonah Weiner The New Yorker 06/21/2018
Chase isn't the only auteur to turn an audience's bloodlust against itself, but unlike, say, Michael Haneke or Quentin Tarantino, he chose an unnervingly quiet way to leave us on the hook, in perpetuity. Go to Full Review

A show about everything, that meant something, that adds up to no specific conclusion, or realisation, or point of clarity. The wheel turns. The American Nightmare continues. Go to Full Review

The Sopranos is written with psychological depth and made with creative freedom. The result is personal, but not impenetrable or surly. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Who knows? We'll never know. And it's better that way. If you're thinking there's a movie in the works, think again. It was supposed to end like this. Go to Full Review

Cem Okan Y @cmyldz23 Mar 7 This is a review for the overall series. It requires some time to adjust to the characters and what is happening. The best part of this series is its power in making you like someone you should not. See more Igor S @Igor_Sena Jan 7 A true classic. To say more, would be wasting the time you could be spending watching it. See more Matt J @RT95392035 Nov 18 Others may attempt to copy it, but they will fail. The best "Family" show ever. See more Izzy H. @Izzy215 Nov 2 It is a 5/5, but I was left wanting more at the end. I get the finale and final scene, but still thought we should’ve gotten more from it. The season really changes my perception of Tony, which further cements its brilliance. Going to miss this show. See more Yash B @yashbansal Oct 23 The more I think about "The Sopranos," the more I realize how brilliant a show it is. I went on the long journey of watching this show, and I am so glad I did. It is really the perfect storm of writing, storytelling, and acting that was so ahead of its time. The story centers around an antihero who is capable of truly evil things, but finds the humanity in him and those around him. This show is very consistent from the first season, and I think every season is great, and it features a few standout seasons near the end. The ending of the show is infamous, but after watching it and processing it, I actually do think I am with the camp that thinks it's a genius finale that can spark so many interesting conversations. Outside of the brilliant writing, the acting is also too good here, featuring a career-defining performance from the late great James Gandolfini. Tony Soprano is a complex character with questionable morals, but like the best characters in television, I always wanted to see what he would do next. Overall, this is one of the great American television shows, and I am almost certain I would only appreciate it more if I watched it again down the road.
