C B @RT03025588 Jan 7 Billy Crystal plays a psychiatrist who tries to unravel the mystery involving a disturbed boy, in this supernatural/psychological drama/thriller. Along the way, he has to deal with his own demons, which surface as a result of his investigation. All the acting is excellent and, with each episode only being a 1/2 hour long, it is just the right length. With the very first episode, I was intrigued with the story and Crystal is such a likeable guy, you really want things to work out. In the last episode, there is a 2 second long nod to The Shining. Can you spot it? See more Bruce R @RT60933325 07/09/2025 The constant visions, voices, and swirling hallucinations made this show overly indulgent and reliant on someone's attempt to be artistically creepy, probably in attempt to be interesting and engaging. In reality, these things were unbelievably annoying by the 3rd episode. Had the show actually just had an interesting plot and great acting, that's all it would've needed. It was too heavy handed at trying to be deliberately psychological and I found myself laboring to get through it, constantly sighing. Of all the shows on AppleTV+, this was by far the worst and was a major misstep by the network. It had no business sharing the same space as the other great shows on the platform. It does have some loose ends, however I feel the story is impactful and an interesting twist on what is happening. I don’t feel like you’re wasting time watching it. It’s one of those where it was entertaining enough and suspenseful so it wasn’t without merit. It just didn’t knock it out of the park like other Apple Originals can do. This ten-episode show consists of a lot of filler, numerous spooky images of blood and worms and creepy children and a dead wife. None of it adds to the story or makes much sense after the story is over. I kept fast-forwarding through each episode. Perhaps, had Crystal boiled these five hours down to two, he would have produced a decent horror film, but even that’s not certain. I found the whole story rather confusing. I thought I was watching a monster movie, except the solution to the mystery transformed the narrative into psychobabble. I think Billy Crystal, based on his performance, might succeed if he tries a different horror story, produced by someone else. His BEFORE story, however, does not satisfy. /////////// On a side note, what’s with all the one-word titles we’ve been seeing in cinema? BEFORE. FROM. SMILE.
