Use /r/whatsthissnake for wild Snake ID requests

The curated home on Reddit for snake ID requests is r/whatsthissnake. Please take advantage of the fine services they have to offer. No medical ID ie "does this look like a bite to you?". If you think you were envenomated by a snake go to the hospital.

No images of dead or injured snakes

This is a place for snake enthusiasts, and images of dead or injured snakes are upsetting to many of our members. Posts seeking identification of such images are encouraged to post in r/whatsthissnake

No discussion of killing snakes

Discussion of killing snakes is not permitted. You may not suggest it, hint at it, brag about it, or describe ways to do it. This topic is NOT welcome here, under any circumstance.

Be polite and courteous to other users

Not everyone has the same level of experience, and all advice can be dealt kindly. Harassment, name-calling, and discriminatory language in any form is not tolerated.

Post on captive, medically-significant snakes must involve accredited zoos or institutions

Posts concerning individual or private ownership or care of medically significant species are not allowed. Animals in zoos, institutions or accredited breeding facilities are allowed with proper contextualization.

Post involving dangerous animals must contain proper use of personal protective equipment

Use PPE. Bites are not trophies and handling a medically significant snake without protective equipment is not a sign of expertise but rather the antithesis of it.

Hooks, tongs, tubes, gloves. No skin on skin outside of tubes and no neck pinching.

Whining about other subreddits or moderators will result in removal / ban.

This isn't a place to air your perceived grievances and circle jerk about your ban somewhere. We're removing these posts and the people who comment on them.

Posts and comments must reflect the reality of wildlife ecology.

Posts about wild snakes need to be correct. Your post may be removed if it contains errors, even specific often-repeated errors, like "cottonmouths chase people" or "hognose snakes mimic cobras".

Do not provide an ID without a location

For snake ID help visit r/whatsthissnake, but in general, providing an ID before a location is given is problematic because it often makes the OP not respond to legitimate requests for location. Many species look alike, especially where ranges meet. Users may be unaware that location is critically important to providing a good ID. They may also not know ID requests are not allowed here.

Include a location when you resubmit to /r/whatsthissnake

Please state the location of the observed snake you would like to ID. City, county, or state is usually sufficient enough (please do not divulge too specific of a location for the animal's protection.)

No advertising, spamming, buying, selling or trading of live animals

Advertising, spamming and buy/sell/trade/rehome of animals is better left to another forum

No low effort posts, rage baiting, brigading or dispute settling.

Posts should be your own original ideas and content. Please don't repost social media posts or stock images, or flashy images to attract attention drive engagement or purposely manipulate a community. No ragebait. This includes screenshots of social media posts, reposts of them, links to any of the many exploitative YouTube channels and calls to flood or otherwise engage with other communities. Please don't post here if someone owes you money or product.

When sharing a wild snake include which species you found aa well as a rough geographic location.

A name and a rough location are two critical pieces of context that are needed when discussing wild snakes. If you share a wild snake, include what it is and location. An ID to the species level is best but a common name is sufficient. If you need an ID, go to r/whatsthissnake.
