New user trying to create a map
New user trying to create a map

Hey guys! I discovered Gimp few weeks ago when i was looking for a program that i could use to draw the map of my fantasy world.

Gimp looks amazing, but so far i watch some tutorial (most of them are 6+ years ago) and i don't understand the way they are creating their basic continent shape.

For example, one of them is doing on a new canvas :

Filters > Render > Noise > Solid Noise, Colors > Treshold

This create a black and white image of basic continent like shape. But from there i can't really find how to select one shape i love and use it on another canvas.

In other words, what i would like to do is :

Generate basic shape that looks like continent, then select the one I want and save it. Then use the images i previoulsy saved to place them on a canvas where i will then draw the outline and later add details.

If you have a link to some kind of tutorial to do it or can share some of your knowledge to help me i would really appreciate it. Sorry if this is unclear, i am still unfamiliar with Gimp and English isn't my main language. Feel free to ask for more details of needed.

Thanks for reading me and thanks for your help and tips!

(pt. 2) GIMP+Photoshop UI or Affinity?
(pt. 2) GIMP+Photoshop UI or Affinity?

After reading all of your comments, I decided to learn GIMP from zero and if my eyes will like everything it has standardly, I'll stick with it. I'll always can change the interface with hotkeys to the PhotoGIMP, but the idea behind differences can help me learn new patterns. For example, I saw that Ctrl+D duplicate an object and here I remember about the same hotkey in Blender 3D. Interesting, are GIMP's and Blender 3D's hotkeys came from the same root? Btw, is there a site or a .pdf, where I could see the comparison between all GIMP and Photoshop shortcuts?

Also I'd like to ask(I can find it by myself, but it can take a while for the checking) if someone knows great sources to learn GIMP from zero to the writing own scripts? Even tho I prefer the books, if there's a great YT channel, that would be awesome for me too
