A method suitably evolved for qualitative assessment of care in antenatal clinics of primary health centers is reported here. The study was made on 25 clinic days. A total of 105 expectant mothers, selected by systematic random method, were observed for the types of antenatal care provided using a specially prepared check list of quality items with a scoring procedure. The total score in each case indicated the quality of the care rendered. The mean scores for each component of antenatal care, expressed as a percentage of maximum obtainable score were: obtaining history 66, general physical examination 59, obstetrical examination 72, blood pressure recording 100, measurement of height and weight 59, Hb estimation and urine analysis 94 each, tetanus toxoid administration 66, health education 73, prescription explanation and maintenance of records 100 each. Thus it was possible by this method to assess the quality of care provided and identify the components of antenatal care requiring improvement and also the extent to which doctors, public health nurses/auxiliary nurse midwives and pharmacists performed their tasks in the antenatal clinic.
