by Gene Siskel 'Such Good Friends' OTTO "Such Good Preminger': nasty film about infidelity and medical incompetence, and I found it absolutely delightful. That is a strange mixture to find delightful, but the explanation has to do with the rare experience of encountering a movie that achieves nearly everything it attempts. It's a good and funny story, acripted under a pseudonym by Elaine May [she wants her name on a script only if she directs it] from Lois Gould's more maudlin novel. The good friends in the title belong to Julie Messinger [Dyan Cannon], woman given to wild sexual imaginings who is married to a sexually unresponsive art director of a national magazine. When husband Richard enters a fashionable New York City hospital to have a mole removed and, thru the clinic's bungling, ends up in the intensive care unit, Julie has time to reconsider her marriage. When Julie discovers the reasons for Richard's unre1 sponsiveness are named Miranda, Molly, and Marcy, she really reconsiders her mar- TRIBUNE MINIREVIEW Delightfully nasty ***½ "SUCH GOOD FRIENDS" Produced and directed by Otto PremInger, screenplay by Esther Dale, based on the novel by Lois Gould, photographed by Gayne Rescher, music by Thomas Z. Tho Julie's dialog at the end of the movie suggests there is some larger truth being explored, "Such Good Friends" is first and foremost catty look at the decorboth physical and mental-of upper middle-class New York. Preminger succeeds most often when his film, his best since "Anatomy of a Murder" [1959], is as realistic as one of Julie's fantasies involving Burgess Meredith at a cocktail party wearing a best selling novel as a codpiece.
