Name:
Named in 1906 by Peter Nikolaevich Chirvinsky [Carbapatit] or in 1916 by Reinhard Brauns [Carbonatapatit] from the Greek word meaning "to deceive" and the CARBONATE- prefix in allusion to the presence of some carbonate substitution for phosphate. Many early synonyms exist for this mineral including pseudoapatite, francolite, collophane, dahllite, carbapatite, podolite, quercylite, kurskite, grodnolite, etc., but not all of these names represent homogeneous materials nor are strictly applied to fluorine-dominant compositions.
A variety of fluorapatite with carbonate group (CO3) substituting for some of the phosphate (PO4) groups.
Compare also collophane.

Is the dominant constituent of phosphorite.

Optical Data of Carbonate-rich FluorapatiteHide

Type:
Uniaxial (-)
RI values:
nω = 1.6785 nε = 1.6155
Max. Birefringence:
δ = 0.063
Based on recorded range of RI values above.

Interference Colours:
The colours simulate birefringence patterns seen in thin section under crossed polars. They do not take into account mineral colouration or opacity.

Michel-Levy Bar The default colours simulate the birefringence range for a 30 ยตm thin-section thickness. Adjust the slider to simulate a different thickness.

Grain Simulation You can rotate the grain simulation to show how this range might look as you rotated a sample under crossed polars.

Surface Relief:
Moderate
