About Jahnsite GroupHide

Richard H. Jahns
Formula:
XM1M22M32(H2O)8(OH)2(PO4)4
Name:
The group has its name after the generic name jahnsite, which is named in honor of Richard Henry Jahns (10 March 1915, Los Angeles, California, USA - 31 December 1983, Palo Alto, California, USA), mineralogist and pegmatite expert, Stanford University, Palo Alto, California, USA.
The Jahnsite group is a group of complex monoclinic phosphates with a general formula XM1M22M32(H2O)8(OH)2(PO4)2. The group is divided into 2 subgroups on the basis of the species defining dominant cation at the M3 site:
Jahnsite Subgroup (M3 = Fe3+)
Whiteite Subgroup (M3 = Al).

The group was established and approved by IMA in 2018 and is broader and includes more minerals than the historically defined "jahnsite group".

The suffix in the name of the minerals in this group indicates sequentially the dominant atom in the X, M1 and M2 positions in the structure.

Click on any node to view relationships. Formula-derived relationship network for the group members above. Use Find related species to add formula-neighbour species outside the current group view. Solid links show inferred chemical differences; dashed violet links show same-formula crystallographic differences. Hydration states are not treated as relationship changes. These relationships do not imply any real-world substitution reactions between these species.
