Old manganese prospect / mine in Miocene sedimentary rocks of the Matese Mountains, located on the eastern slope of Colle del Monaco, above Campitello Matese, at about 1600 a.s.l.
Trenches were dug to exploit a 2-m-thick mineralised layer. Some underground excavations were also carried out.
The currently observable minerals mainly consist of manganese oxides (pyrolusite, 'psilomelane', and todorokite-like minerals) associated with calcite, dolomite, and minor quartz. Pyrite, frequently pseudomorphed by goethite, also occurs.
Some trenches, presently covered by eluvial debris, were also excavated below the above mentioned workings towards Capo d'Acqua (Capo d'Acqua workings).
