About the Association

The voice of Latvia's
small hydropower sector

The Small Hydroenergy Association (MHEA) was founded in April 1999 with the goal of promoting the use of water energy from small and medium rivers in Latvia.

The Association coordinates cooperation among small and medium water energy users, facilitates information exchange on water energy utilization, and advances the development of renewable energy resources.

Our work is focused on strengthening Latvia's energy independence by harnessing the natural hydropower potential of Latvian rivers in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner.

Latvia has approximately 700 small hydroelectric power stations that together make a significant contribution to the country's renewable energy balance.
