📢 The Digital Public Goods Alliance is excited to welcome the Wikimedia Foundation as its newest member! After Wikipedia and Wikidata were officially recognised as digital public goods in 2025, the Wikimedia Foundation now joins the DPGA to help strengthen and advance the global DPG ecosystem. The Wikimedia Foundation is celebrating a new milestone in its mission to champion open knowledge 🎉 The nonprofit organization joined the Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA), an initiative endorsed by the United Nations that promotes the discovery, development, and use of digital public goods (DPGs) such as open-source software, dataset, AI models, and content. As Wikipedia celebrates its 25th birthday, the membership reaffirms the Wikimedia Foundation’s commitment to open knowledge as a public good, ensuring it remains accessible, rights-based, and governed in the public interest. In 2025, Wikipedia and Wikidata, two Wikimedia projects, were officially recognized as digital public goods by the DPGA. The acknowledgment showcased the important role that volunteers play in building a better internet that serves the public interest. Wikipedia continues to celebrate 25 years of free knowledge with two wins at The Webby Awards! 🎉 The "25 Years of Wikipedia" time capsule has been recognized as People's Voice Winner in the Websites & Mobile Sites, Education category. And the video celebrating our 25th birthday campaign "Knowledge is Human", created in partnership with the agency Kin, has been crowned a People's Voice Winner in the Video & Film, Corporate Social Responsibility (Branded) category. Hailed as the "internet's highest honor", The Webby Awards is the leading international awards organization recognizing excellence on the internet. We are grateful for the support of Wikimedians from all around the world who voted and were essential in achieving these (and many other!) milestones. Thank you!

📚🍃 What happens to knowledge that is not remembered? What systems should we build to protect information and cultural assets from being lost to climate disasters or war? How can governments and institutions invest in local digital knowledge commons to prevent representation gaps in new technologies like AI? 🌐 With a view to proposing public policy responses to these questions, the Wikimedia Foundation and the Open Knowledge Foundation (OKF) are working on a joint initiative to rethink open knowledge as critical digital infrastructure (CDI), receiving the same strategic attention and investment as essential public services such as water or electricity. 💬 Over the next few months, we will be developing a position paper and hosting a series of regional dialogues in order to gather diverse perspectives to help us define the future of the digital commons. 🤔 What does an internet that truly works for the public good look like? 🌐 As early optimism about the promise of a free, open, and secure internet is met with the current realities of techlash, surveillance, monopolies, and rising censorship, how do we preserve that initial vision and take practical steps to advance it? 🌎 During a Zero Day Workshop, held as part of the Centro de Estudios en Libertad de Expresión’s (CELE) annual “Towards a Free Internet” event, digital rights groups across Latin America came together to imagine a “digital utopia.” 💡 The goal of the group was simple yet challenging: to move from merely resisting setbacks to actively proposing the future of the internet we want. Center for Studies in Freedom of Expression (CELE), the Wikimedia Foundation, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) have gathered the collective discussions and conclusions into one place.
