Side Quests

There are a number of optional side quests and secret missions you can undertake in Paper Mario. Here are the most important ones. For a guide on the main quest, please refer to our detailed Paper Mario Walkthrough.

Club 64 Sidequest

Go to Club 64 near the port and talk to the writer. He will give you the Lyrics and ask you to bring it to a composer somewhere in the world. You will find said composer Dry Dry Outpost in the pink house near the red palm tree. Give him the Lyrics and you shall receive the Melody. Bring it back to Club 64 and Chanterelle will sing the whole creation. As a reward for making the whole gig happen you will receive the Attack FX D Badge.

Dream Sidequest

Merlon will tell you about a strange dream when you talk to him after finishing Chapter 3. He will tell you about running round and round around a red palm tree. While you're in Dry Dry Outpost, why not walk in circles around the red palm tree? After awhile, the guy nearby will tell you about a dream of his own: "There's a house with a whirling roof in a large town near a castle. If you spin jump three times inside the house, something good should happen to you." Go back to Merlon's house in Toad Town and spin jump three times inside. The Quick Change Badge

Radio Trading Event Sidequests

Examine the radio in Koopa Town (the house with the sunbathing Koopa). It will tell you: "Anyone who takes a Koopa Leaf to the front of the main gate in Toad Town will receive a surprise gift." Get a Koopa Leaf from the tree in Koopa Village, then warp back to Toad Town. Run to the main gate and talk to the Toad with the purple hat. You will get an item in return for the Koopa Leaf. Other Radio events send you to the Toad Town restaurant and the Dry Dry Ruins. Rewards include other recovery items, such as a Maple Shroom and Cashew Special.

Lil' Oinks Secret

Wondering what the strange piggy farm near the Toad Town Train Station is for? Walk up to the shack to the left of the pen and buy an egg by jumping on the small platform. Now walk over to the egg that comes out and hit it with your hammer. An Oink of a random color will hatch and move into the pen. It doesn't get interesting until you have 10 Oinks. The moment you hatch the 11th Oink, one Oink will have to get kicked out of the pen. It will then leave behind an item.

The type of item is determined by the Oink's color. Here is the complete list, with White being the most common Oink, and Gold being the rarest.

Oink ColorItem Reward
White Super Shroom
Black Dried Shroom
Flower Maple Syrup
Pink Fire Flower
Tiger Thunder Rage
Question Mark Repel Gel
Shroom Life Shroom
Star Shooting Star
Silver Jammin' Jelly
Gold Ultra Shroom

Merlee's Tent

Ever talked to Merlee? This helpful witch lives in the desert town Dry Dry Outpost and can help you out on your quest with some major spell power. To find her, go into the alley right next to Toad's House in Dry Dry Outpost (see the left picture below). Jump forward over the left box and the camera will swing around to reveal a hidden area. Talk to Merlee to learn about her special spells. Depending on how much money you spend (we suggest to go for the most expensive one for 50 coins), she will help you in and after battles. The spell does wear off after a certain amount of time, but until then, it provides you with additional attack power in some battles, more coins after battles, and the like.

Secret Playroom

There is a hidden Playroom in Toad Town where you can participate in games to earn cash. To access the Playroom, go South in Toad Town until you get to the area with the Li'l Oink Farm. To get into the Playroom, go left immediately after you enter this area (there is a narrow passageway that's not fenced off). Hit the tree with your hammer and a pipe will appear on the right. You can now go into the Playroom, but note that you need either a Silver and/or the Gold card to play.

Chuck Quizmo

Additionally, you can find the character Chuck Quizmo in any of Paper Mario's towns. Talk to him to start a quiz -- which rewards you with Star Pieces. All the Quizmo Answers are found here.
