Signal Processing

The connective foundation that allows modern media operations to move freely.

Signal Processing is the discipline that ensures video, audio and metadata can move coherently through a media operation. It is where signals are converted, synchronized, mapped, monitored and adapted so content can travel between formats, standards and environments without friction.

In practice, Signal Processing is what allows creative intent to survive technical reality. It ensures that signals originating in SDI, IP or virtualized environments can be processed, combined and delivered reliably, regardless of how workflows evolve.

The Context We Are Operating In

Media operations today are defined by diversity. SDI and IP coexist. Cloud and on-prem environments increasingly intersect. Content moves between production, distribution and streaming workflows that were never designed as a single system.

At the same time, organizations are actively transforming how they operate. They need to extend reach, adopt new formats and collaborate across locations, while continuing to deliver consistent quality. Reinvention is no longer an isolated project. It is an ongoing reality.

Signal Processing sits at the center of this transformation. It determines how easily workflows can adapt, how confidently systems can be extended and how resilient operations remain as complexity grows. The ability to interconnect everything has become foundational.

What This Enables in Real Productions

When Signal Processing is designed as an enabler rather than a constraint, it removes friction from everyday work.

Engineering and operations teams can integrate new sources, formats or destinations without redesigning the system each time. System architects can evolve environments step by step rather than through disruptive rebuilds. Integration partners can make heterogeneous infrastructures behave as one coherent operation.

For content teams, this means fewer compromises. Signals arrive when expected, in the right format and with consistent timing. Workflows remain predictable even as they span facilities, regions or deployment models.

For organizations, this enables change without starting over. Existing investments remain relevant. New opportunities can be explored with confidence. Signal diversity becomes something the operation absorbs naturally, rather than something it struggles against.>

One Goal, Different Realizations, And How We Approach It

At Grass Valley, our goal with Signal Processing has always been clear: to ensure that all workflows can connect and flow, regardless of format, standard or deployment model.

That belief has shaped the Densité family across both hardware-based and virtualized environments. Hardware solutions address density, integration and continuous operation. Virtualized solutions, enabled by AMPP OS, allow high-quality Signal Processing to run wherever it creates value, on-prem, in the cloud or in hybrid environments.

Building an operating system like AMPP OS is not incidental. It is what allows us to deliver virtualized Signal Processing with the same intent, quality and reliability as hardware, while adding flexibility that traditional architectures cannot provide.

By offering both, we can support transformation without bias and help customers reinvent their operations with confidence.

Understanding the Technologies Behind the Approaches

Signal Processing can be realized through different architectural approaches, each shaped by how resources are provisioned and how workflows evolve.

Densité:

Hardware-based Signal Processing relies on dedicated platforms designed for continuous operation at scale. Processing is performed on specialized cards within high-density frames, providing predictable availability of resources and tight integration with SDI and IP infrastructures. Standards such as SMPTE ST 2110, NMOS and a wide range of broadcast formats are supported natively. This approach is well suited for environments where interfaces are active around the clock, density matters and integration needs are highly specific.

Densité X:

Virtualized Signal Processing takes a software-defined approach. Processing functions run as applications on standard compute and can be deployed wherever they are needed. Signals that already exist in the virtualized domain can remain there for processing, avoiding unnecessary transitions into SDI or IP environments and back. With Densité X, tools are deployed directly from the AMPP App Store, making advanced processing capabilities instantly available across on-prem, cloud or hybrid infrastructures.

Key Difference:

A key architectural difference lies in how processing steps are synchronized. In clocked signal environments such as SDI, each processing stage aligns signals to a common timing reference. Even minimal processing introduces a normalized delay per step, which is expected and well understood. In the virtualized domain, processing stages are not reclocked between steps. Each function processes data as needed and passes it on immediately. Reclocking only occurs when content is presented or exits to a timed interface. This allows multiple processing steps to occur within a single frame-time, improving efficiency and reducing cumulative delay in complex workflows.

Typical Characteristics at a Glance

Every media operation is different. Infrastructure history, production rhythm, audience reach and business ambition all shape how Signal Processing is applied. The Densité family is designed to support this full spectrum, allowing teams to combine approaches and shape workflows that fit their reality.

The overview below highlights common patterns seen in practice. These are not prescriptions. Many operations blend elements across columns to create something uniquely their own.

Turning Capabilities into the Right Choice

Choosing how to realize Signal Processing is less about technology preference and more about operational context.

Hardware-based environments often deliver strong value where interfaces are continuously active, where density and tight integration with SDI and IP are essential and where resource availability must be predictable. Virtualized environments often unlock value where workflows change frequently, where signals originate in the cloud or where processing needs to follow opportunity rather than fixed infrastructure.

In practice, many operations combine both. Some functions remain anchored in hardware while others are deployed virtually to extend reach or bridge workflows. What matters is not choosing one understanding how each contributes to a resilient and adaptable operation.
