Final Fantasy IV (3D Remake)

This is arguably the best version of FF4. The cut scenes are better and the story is more fleshed out and makes more sense. This is probably the hardest version too. You WILL need to level grind to survive it. The problem is not the low res textures and models. It's the low frame rate. Battle mode runs at 15 FPS and that is not acceptable.

If you played these games on Steam, you can expect the same experiences for the GOG ports. So unless you care as much about DRM-free ports as I do, you'd be double-dipping. That said, they should port the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters to GOG, as well as a properly fixed port of FF7 that you can play without it crashing. The 3D version of Final Fantasy 3 was my introduction to the franchise when I bought it for the DS as a middle schooler, so even though people are mixed on it, I do think it's a good reinterpretation of the OG Famicom game. The same goes for the 3D version of Final Fantasy 4. While the graphics won't appeal to everyone, it's a good re-interpretation of the SNES game. Final Fantasy 8 is definitely the black sheep of this lot, but I did beat it a couple of years ago, and once you get a grip on the junction system, the game will surprise you. Just don't hop into it expecting to beat it like a JRPG that you're used to. Of course, Final Fantasy 9 needs no introduction. It goes back to basics and serves as the franchise's swan song for many fans. (Personally, I thought 10, 7, and 6 were better, but that's my opinion.) Who knows. Maybe if these DRM-free GOG ports sell well, we'll start to see other Square Enix games get the same treatment. There's also a mod that makes the battle framerate in FF4 3D more bearable. Just unzip it, drop it into your game's root installation, and replace the file. Unfortunately, GOG will not let me post links in reviews, so you have to look for it yourself.

To all new players who may not be aware - This version is the PC port, of the Mobile port, of the Nintendo DS port. It can be argued that this is one of the worst ways to actually play this game. That being said, the DS version of Final Fantasy 4 is genuinely very good, and very much worth your time.
