This compendium provides information on AC (also known as psittacosis, ornithosis, and parrot fever) and psittacosis (also known as parrot disease, parrot fever, and chlamydiosis) to public health officials, veterinarians, physicians, the companion-bird industry, and others concerned with control of the disease and protection of public health.

Receiving far less notice were field tests during the 1950s and 1960S using "hot" agents, including the organisms that cause: anthrax (a hideously disfiguring lethal disease whose spore-forming bacteria can survive in the soil for decades); Qundulant, rabbit and parrot fevers (diseases of livestock, rodents and birds that can cause severe flulike symptoms in humans); and valley fever (an often-fatal fungal disease).
