Previously a science teacher, her research interests include scientific literacy, socioscientific issues and
argumentation. She teaches in pre-service science teacher education.
Similarly, they also need the skills which help them in oral discussions and
argumentation about the socio scientific issues.
3) notes, "
Argumentation does not take place in a normative void[;] one cannot seriously make the argument that one ought not to argue, or that one ought not to take
argumentation seriously, without destroying the point of making that argument" (emphasis in original).
First, that
argumentation is not only a cognitive but also a practical affair.
The conference, which was held for the first time in the Middle East and graced by HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, focused on the distinctive role that Qatar plays as a global bridge between civilisations and religions and an advocate of the culture of
argumentation, tolerance and acceptance.
Therefore, such models can be seen as
argumentation schemes, with the meaning of "
argumentation scheme" as it is in informal logic (Walton, 1996; Walton, Reed, Macagno, 2008).
In pointing out the need for
argumentation skills, Schwab (1962) argued that science education is merely a presentation of conclusions that are taught as empirical and absolute truth - a simple unproblematic collection of facts (Geddis, 1991).
The text contains five lessons, specifically (1) Perspectives on
Argumentation, (2) Language in
Argumentation, (3) Arguments: Analysis and Evaluation (4) Managing Conflict, and (5) Ethics in Inquiry and Advocacy.
We have therefore used the available literature on
argumentation in science education (for an extensive review, see Erduran & Jimenez-Aleixandre, 2007) to develop two instructional models that teachers can use to design a lesson that promotes and supports student engagement in scientific
argumentation: the Generate-an-Argument model and the Evaluate Alternatives model.
In justificatory
argumentation two or more persons seek to justify or to excuse a belief or action, to determine whether it is a belief one ought to accept (or to reject) or an action one ought to undertake (or to forgo), or whether the circumstances of the case present sufficient reasons (e.g., necessity, duress, compulsion, coercion, manipulation) for excusing a person for believing or doing something that is contrary to right.
Shamma bint Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi organised the first of its kind conference in the region entitled "
Argumentation & Society: For a constructive dialogue; a communication without violence".
We give an overview of the design and results of the Second International Competition on Computational Models of
Argumentation (ICCMA-17).
Post-Godelian Ontological
Argumentation for God's Existence: A Phenomenological-Existential Perspective, JOSHUA R.
The conference reflects the study of logic and more broadly computational models of
argumentation that have emerged during the past couple of decades within the field of artificial intelligence.
