In one way or another, they interrogate the way that human
animality is problematized in Jewish texts, from the Talmud's Tractate Avodah Zarah (Wasserman) to the central texts of medieval Ashkenazic pietism (Shyovitz) to Jewish-authored literature of Central European modernity (Geller), and, finally, to the books, comics, and film adaptations of the story of the animated clay man, the golem, in twentieth-and twenty-first-century Germany, Israel, and America (Barzilai).
