Frank Johnson, the obstetrician who delivered the quints, the boys, Joshua and Brandon, are identical twins and the girls, Ashlee, Rhealyn and Renee, are most likely triplets.
Like other children their age, the Gaither Quints bicker sometimes, but it is apparent that they are also extremely close.
In addition, many people in the Indiana community have adopted the Gaither Quints as their own.
And 13-year-old big brother Ryan, they say, takes the celebrity of his quint siblings in stride.
In a lawsuit filed last June in Lane County Circuit Court, the club said the Quints did not have permission to cut down the trees, making the act illegal under state law.
In their response, the Quints claimed they had "clear and explicit permission" from a golf course official to remove the trees.
Before the case went to trial, the Quints' homeowners insurance company in late April offered to settle the matter for $28,500 plus reimbursement of "reasonable" attorneys fees.
Louis Kurtz, the Quints' attorney, said the payment does not mean the Quints did anything wrong.
"It's not an admission of liability by the Quints. It's simply a settlement of a disputed claim by an insurance company.
The Quints cut the trees partly because they feared they might fall on their property, Kurtz said.
Quint understands this nostalgia perfectly but does not let it stop him from elevating Ariosto's achievement in the mode of tragedy and chaos.
For example, according to Sheers and Quint, when Alcina addresses the council of the fairies or sorceresses, she "loosed her tongue with these words" (1.24, "la lingua a tai parole sciolse").
Neither Morgan nor Quint notices that Ariosto wrongly makes her supernatural.
