The Russo-Japanese War began with a surprise Japanese attack on the Pacific Squadron of the Imperial Russian Navy at its base at Port Arthur on the Liaodong peninsula (in what is now north-eastern China) on the night of February 8th, 1904.
However, six days after the signing of the peace treaty confirming the ceding to Japan of the Liaodong peninsula, Russia, Germany and France, in a diplomatic intervention accompanied by the military threat of the Russian and German fleets in Asia, forced Japan to hand the region back to China.
This extended the open economic zones of the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, Xiamen-Zhangzhou-Quanzhou Triangle in south Fujian, Shandong Peninsula, Liaodong Peninsula, Hebei, and Guangxi into an open coastal belt.
