29 May 2026 Employment in April 2026 virtually unchanged from the previous month after seasonal adjustment

Roughly 45.61 million persons resident in Germany (national concept) were in employment in April 2026. According to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the seasonally adjusted number of persons in employment therefore remained virtually unchanged (-6,000; 0.0%) compared with the previous month. In the period from May 2025 to March 2026, employment decreased by an average of 17,000 people month on month.

Structures of the German labour market in the light of the COVID-19-pandemic

The measures introduced in Germany to push back the COVID-19-pandemic have also lead to a significant reduction of economic activities and consequently have effects on the labour market. For persons in employment this can mean reduced working times, slack work (“Kurzarbeit”), or even the loss of employment. On the other side, persons working in so called “essential jobs” might even experience substantially more working hours and a higher work strain.
