About Us
Advancing Reponsible AI
Started in 2018, the Centre for Advancing Responsible and Ethical Artificial Intelligence (CARE-AI) is the primary AI research centre at the University of Guelph. With affiliated faculty spanning all 8 Colleges at the University, there is a broad range of research interests and expertise with researchers working in one or more of the three core pillars: AI methodologies, AI applications, and AI responsibility. A particular intention of CARE-AI is to explore and operationalize AI ethics in addition to advancing AI technology.
Areas of research include a focus on AI methodology or combining AI with domain expertise in areas such human and animal health, environmental sciences, agriculture, agri-food, business and the bio-economy.
Beyond research, we are contributing to a more AI literate society by supporting individuals and companies to use AI effectively and responsibly.
Our Activities
Building Better AI
With a foundation in AI research, we focus on 6 areas to positively impact society.
Research
Across a broad range of inquiry, researchers explore both primary research and industry-focused problems. Through the CARE-AI Seed Fund, we support novel research, especially from Early Career Researchers and through Interdisciplinary projects.
Academic Programs
We support three graduate academic programs at the University of Guelph with the goal to develop the next generation in core technical AI and the societal and ethical implications of these emerging technologies.
Training
We offer a range of learning experiences in AI technologies, from self-paced, online courses to in-person workshops that address specific skills and knowledge or general understanding. Custom training is available to meet the needs of your team.
AI Entrepreneurship
Working with partners on campus and in the broader innovation ecosystem, we work to foster entrepreneurship by providing encouragement and direction to connect potential entrepreneurs to resources to develop viable AI-based startups.
AI Strategy
AI adoption is struggling in Canada; we work with individuals and organizations to help them better understand how AI can be embedded in processes, solve key problems, and deliver financial benefits.
AI Solutions
We develop AI-based tools, processes, and apps that can solve operational gaps at higher education institutions, provide proof of concepts and prototypes that help with the commercialization of research by unlocking domain expertise, and support Edtech that uses AI to personalize education.
We Operate Under Three Core Pillars
The focus of research at CARE-AI aligns with one or more of the three core pillars.
AI Methodologies
Affiliated researchers work on developing and enhancing algorithms, data structures, and improving model training. Essentially, building and expanding what can be done with AI in the future by improving the underlying methodology upon which AI is built.
AI Applications
Using AI tools and methods, affiliated faculty unlock domain expertise to explore novel and complex research questions. By applying AI, researchers at U of G further research in a broad range of fields.
AI Responsibility
A key element of the responsible use of AI involves examining the ethical aspects of AI including bias, privacy, transparency, explainability, and accountability. Addressing these issues helps to guide what should be done with AI.
