|
Breaking
or B-boying began in a recreation center in the South Bronx
of New York City in the early 1970s.
B-Boys
were the ones who would dance or 'freak out,' 'bust moves,'
and 'go-off' on the dancefloor with their steps and freezes.
These
elements along with graffiti art, MC-ing, tagging and beatbox
are what make up the hip hop culture.

B-girl
Firefly, aka 24 year-old female breakdancer Andrea Parker from Burley,
Leeds has performed in numerous competitions, events and street
festivals with members of top UK breakdance crews such as the UK
Allstars.
B-girl
battles
She has danced her way to the top from the launch for Sony Playstation
2 in Earls Court to the
world famous B-girl Battle of the Year in Braunschweig, Germany,
and is currently looking to compete at the B-boy Summit 2003 in
Los Angeles.
Firefly
was asked to join the UK Allstars crew in 2002 and has competed
with them in battles in France and the UK. (Breakdance battles are
where one member from each crew goes head-to-head on the dancefoor).
UK
Urban Games
At the UK Urban Games in London
last year the Allstars took victory in the crew battles qualifying
event for UK B-boy World Championships. Firefly
has also recently won the first ever UK B-girl battle at the Flowz
event.
Breakdance
workshops
With an array of UK titiles under her belt Firefly
has been turning her hand to teaching. She has run street dance
workshops for the past four years with the Leeds based street dance
company D.P.A (Dance Perfection Associates).

Firefly
teaches street dance, poppin’, locking, and breakin’ workshops.
A
beginners breakin’, workshop includes a warm-up followed by learning
the foundations of B-boyin’, including top rock, floorwork and freezes.
