The primary issues covered in this book are the theological issues dividing the Western Roman Catholic and Protestant Communions with the Eastern Orthodox Church. The Orthodox were forced during this period to deal with the doctrinal controversies that divided Roman Catholicism and Protestantism, often using Latin reasonings to counter Reformed errors and Protestant arguments to attack Roman beliefs and pretensions. Eustratios Argenti stands out among his Orthodox contemporaries by his careful and well-reasoned apologetics which, though not uninfluenced by the Western theological methods he learned in higher education Italy, was marked by great fidelity to the Patristic and canonical witness of the Orthodox Tradition. Argenti spent much of his career battling the threat of Latin proselytism and the the subversive assimilation of the Orthodox Hierarchy in the Greek Orthodox world to papal obedience. Argenti's treatment of the issues of the validity of Non-Orthodox baptism, the moment of the consecration of the Holy Gifts in the Liturgy, the nature of the intermediate state after death, and papal infallibility are all covered in Kallistos Ware's interesting and informative study.
This book is worth it. Great interesting read. Quick short book packed with awesome historical information and great citations and references. If you are interested in a short concise book on Orthodox Catholic history, this is a must read.
