  • Eustratios Argenti: A Study of the Greek Church Under Turkish Rule

Eustratios Argenti: A Study of the Greek Church Under Turkish Rule Hardcover – Import, January 1, 1964

5.0 out of 5 stars (7)

This book describes the life and writings of Eustratios Argenti of Chios, who died shortly before 1760. The most important Greek theologian of the eighteenth century, he is chiefly remembered in the Orthodox world today as the author of a long and very thorough work on the Eucharist. He also wrote on baptism, purgatory, and Papal Infallibility. Despite the growing interest in Orthodoxy, the Turkish period of Orthodox history still remains largely unexplored. Timothy [now Bishop Kallistos] Ware therefore discusses in detail the position of Orthodoxy under Turkish rule, with particular reference to the relations between the Orthodox and Roman Catholics. He describes not only the bitter hostility which often prevailed, but also many remarkable and unexpected instances of friendship and intercommunion. An invaluable and theologically sensitive study.

Excellent scholarly study of the Orthodox Church under this period of Ottoman rule, dealing with the life and writings of the eminent Orthodox lay theologian Eustrtaios Argenti. The primary issues covered in this book are the theological issues dividing the Western Roman Catholic and Protestant Communions with the Eastern Orthodox Church. The Orthodox were forced during this period to deal with the doctrinal controversies that divided Roman Catholicism and Protestantism, often using Latin reasonings to counter Reformed errors and Protestant arguments to attack Roman beliefs and pretensions. Eustratios Argenti stands out among his Orthodox contemporaries by his careful and well-reasoned apologetics which, though not uninfluenced by the Western theological methods he learned in higher education Italy, was marked by great fidelity to the Patristic and canonical witness of the Orthodox Tradition. Argenti spent much of his career battling the threat of Latin proselytism and the the subversive assimilation of the Orthodox Hierarchy in the Greek Orthodox world to papal obedience. Argenti's treatment of the issues of the validity of Non-Orthodox baptism, the moment of the consecration of the Holy Gifts in the Liturgy, the nature of the intermediate state after death, and papal infallibility are all covered in Kallistos Ware's interesting and informative study.
