Must Read Book!
Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2016This book explores the often neglected and forgotten areas of American history. If you are of Mexican- American or even latin descent this book is essential in understanding the fabric of chicano/chicana studies and latino history. Sanchez is the perfect storyteller with his rich and incredibly mixed background in both cultural and historical studies. It provides a solid foundation for understanding the makeup of Southern California and provided me with insight into the immigration process from Mexico in the later half of the 20th century. The detail in this novel is astonishing and complex. Two thumbs up for Sanchez.

Good for ethnic studies major
Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2025"Becoming Mexican American: Ethnicity, Culture, and Identity in Chicano Los Angeles, 1900-1945" by George J. Sanchez is a landmark study in Chicano history, utilizing an interdisciplinary lens to illuminate the formation of Mexican American identity amid early twentieth-century urban transformation. Through meticulous analysis of diverse sources, Sanchez traces the community's adaptive strategies, from economic integration and cultural preservation to political activism and popular media, revealing a hybrid ethnicity forged between Mexican heritage and American pressures. This nuanced exploration challenges assimilationist narratives, portraying culture as a site of innovation and resilience, and remains an indispensable resource for understanding Chicano experiences in Los Angeles.
