Gratitude and praises for And So I Sing
Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2014There is no competition for Rosalyn Story's book. I have bought and given this book to at least a dozen people---all of whom were awed to learn what had gone before them and needs recognition. I am grateful to Rosalyn Story for it and wish she would write a book on the lines of an article in Opera NEWS on the role of black churches in the careers and encouragement of classic singers for those who had NO other route to perform with opera companies----and even today are the guardians of those with talent and who continue to have less than access to equal career routes.

Great Resource about African-American Divas n Opera
Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2017This is my second copy! My own was borrowed by a student and subsequently she fell in love with so, I bought one for her to own! Incredible resource when working with young (and older) african-american singers searching for their Operatic Roots! I actually use this as a text in a class I wrote about Ethnic Diva's in the Classical World!! ~ Dr. Abby Burke

Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2015This a very old paper back but if you are interested in opera singers history this is the book for you. This book is more enjoyable using Youtube so that you can actually hear the difference in their voices.

Well-written book on a neglected topic
Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2014I picked this up at a Half Price Books in Dallas, for about 1/3 the cover price. I figured it would yield some helpful info on some singers that have long fascinated me.
It certainly did that, but I was more impressed by the quality of the writing. There are moments of real eloquence on every page, and some of the metaphors/descriptors left me thinking "BINGO." It's also readable without anything being dumbed down, which can be tricky business to pull off.
The only negative I found was in the almost encyclopedia-like recitation of the career highlights of certain marginal figures. Those sections read like the result of a fact-finding mission. I kept thinking to myself "keep plowing, the chapter on Leontyne is coming..."
Overall, anyone interested in opera/classical singing, race, American history... heck, anyone interested in the intersection of art and society should read this book. I honestly can't believe there isn't a more substantial body of literature on this fascinating vein of American history. You can find biographies on individuals like Price and Anderson, but very little on the connections between them. Perhaps the real achievement of this book is that it traces a credible narrative from the early singing of Elizabeth Greenfield through to Anderson as barrier-breaker to Price as "modern black diva" and so on. There's a real tradition operating here, passed on from generation to generation through the joy of singing.
