Abstract

Wawrzycka Once upon a time, and a communist time it was, there was a Polish translator who worked on Ulysses, and that translator made the nicest historical contributiop to Poland's literary culture. 1 Why would readers of Joyce in general care to read an essay about a translator? Non-native English language readers of Joyce may find this essay-yet another tiny facet on the dtseo-hall of the international Joyce mdustry they help to perpetuateakin to their own interests. On the other hand, readers of Joyce horn into the English (any English) language, reflecting on the floor-to-ceiling apparatus of dictionaries, lexicons, annotations, and encyclopedias that aid their "translation" -riddled activity of reading Joyce, may stay with this essay to catch a glimpse of the workshop of an outsider, a reader-as-translator, a reader-translator. Translation, the ultimate act of close reading and interpretation, partakes in a variety of late twentieth-century postmodern and posnmperial phenomena by having engendered theoretical stances that opened venues for re-reading received sociocultural milieus. A trite dictum that all "reading" is, ultimately, translation merits revisiting at the brink of the twenty-first century. This essay, by taking stock of the centrality of translators' efforts--and by paying tribute to one translator's laborsseeks to bring into focus the mechanism that determmes the survival and/ or demise of t.ranslated literary works, while touching as well on the difference between translating what a text says and translating what a text means.

While the importance of translation in the postmodern globalized world cannot be overemphasized , the act of translation calls for a unique talent. Translation is best described as a phenomenological act in which a translator seeks to enter the mind of the original author and translates on the basis of equivalence, with as little change to the original as possible. It calls for a certain historical sense and knowledge of linguistic transformation happening over a period of time. The translator has also to be aware of the cultural nuances which are untranslatable. Great translations have always been enjoyed as in the case of The Canterbury Tales. With the passage of time, there are calls to translate texts across the linguistic, cultural, medium and genre-specific barriers. My research shows that of all the considerations, a translation is, broadly speaking, a three-pronged strategy, being linguistic, cultural and political act at the same time. My paper takes up case studies of translations into English of an Urdu and a Haryanvi language text and analyses them from the aforesaid angles, bringing out the benefits and underlining the pitfalls on the way.

This paper discusses the impact of translation on literary traditions and the sociological elements which contribute to the shift of the canon. The effort of translation to enlarge and enrich a literary system makes it a powerful tool for the introduction of new aesthetics and trends as well as the ideology implied in them. A translation of a literary work is, in fact, a criticism of that work, a point of view on the author and the text. Poggioli’s idea that translation is an interpretative art, like music, half way between reproduction or craft and a complete original creation is vital for this approach.

Translating Fictions: The Messenger Was a Medium

In this article I will examine the ways in which the ethical gestures available to translators are inscribed in the etymologies of key terms and cognate pairs (especially in English and French) within the semantic field marked out by the category of translation: trade, transfer, transgress. translate / translater, traduire / traduce, betray / trahir. What emerges is a pattern dominated by themes of give and take, loss and gain, and above all, faithfulness and betrayal. Betrayal (like the French verb trahir) holds a pivotal position within this set, due to its two-faced character, given to both deceit and revelation. Juxtaposed on and rooted in these themes are the timeworn types in which translators have been chronically cast (when not simply ignored): the loser (mainly in the sense of the agent of loss) and the traitor. The unfathomable poetic in "the Task of the Translator

On the Basis of a single essay on poetry translation theory, originally intended as a preface to a Baudelaire translation, Walter Benjamin has become influential within the Western tradition of translation theories. In this powerful essay titled "the Task of the Translator," Benjamin strikingly conceptualizes poetry translation through a striking set of metaphors and imagery veering away from all essentialist ideals on poetry translation. A poetic element overwhelms the essay brilliantly making it truly romantic yet revolutionary in intent. This paper is a retrospective attempt to trace the beautiful secrets of the essay's poetic brilliance. It is an attempt to analyze the extremely important role of those metaphors in relaying and interpreting the revolutionary views of Benjamin on poetry translation. Further, it explores how Benjamin's insightful essay bravely challenged the existing translation theories of his time that only preached precision, exactness and fidelity to the letter imparting much inspiration and power to devotees of poetry translation.

“Translation” is a testy term when applied to Joyce’s writing. In this essay, I propose that such terms as “trans-semantification” or “re-languaging” (rather than Jakobson’s “rewording”) reflect more closely the complexities of processes connoted by μεταφράζω, transfere, Übersetzen, переводить, tłumaczyć, traduit, et cetera. The term “translation” has outlived its utility; it has come to denote largely an interlingual transference of a work either via simple lexical substitution, as in literal, word-for-word transfer, or a more complex sense-for-sense transfer (often both, depending on textual demands imposed by the original). By proposing the term “trans-semantification” to name the process of transferring a literary work of art into another language, I wish to denote the complexity of literary re-languaging that, in spite of replacing lexical surface of a literary work, manages to attend to sound, rhythm and semantic coloration of words, phrases, and syntactical units of the original, as well as to take cognizance of cultural references embedded in lexical structures (e.g. names, rhetorical formations, stylistic repetition colloquialisms or invectives) by scrupulously re-fostering them in target language even—or particularly—at the risk of busting the normative boundaries of that language. Trans-semantification means that the very literariness of a literary work is “carried across” and re-created in another language, while largely accounting for the aspects of all aesthetically significant strata and for the “polyphonic harmony” in which these strata co-exist in the original.

THE WORK OF LITERARY TRANSLATION

Offering an original reconceptualization of literary translation, Clive Scott argues against traditional approaches to the theory and practice of translation. Instead, he suggests that translation should attend more to the phenomenology of reading, triggering creative textual thinking in the responsive reader rather than testing the hermeneutic skills of the professional translator. In this new guise, translation enlists the reader as an active participant in the constant re-fashioning of the text's structural, associative, intertextual and inter-sensory possibilities, so that our larger understanding of ecology, anthropology, comparative literature and aesthetics is fundamentally transformed and our sense of the expressive resources of language is radically extended. Literary translation thus assumes an existential value which takes us beyond the text itself to how it situates us in the world, and what part it plays in the geography of human relationships.

Following the interdisciplinary approach, the article presents the translator’s role from the point of view musical terminology, which becomes appropriated for the sake of translation studies. As a result, the study applies the musical term aleatory music denoting an indeterminate type of musical notation which allows considerable freedom in the interpretation of a musical score. From this perspective, the translator, confronted with the inevitable interpretative gaps and indeterminacies in the source text, is compared to a musical performer who interprets the indeterminate aleatory notation. This approach is defined as trans(a)l(e)atory studies which consist in the analysis of multiple interpretative possibilities of target text versions based on one source text.
