Stone is a Copy Ability which gives Kirby the ability to transform himself into a block or statue of hard stone, rendering himself invulnerable to most attacks but also typically unable to move aside from falling or sliding down slopes. This ability is primarily defensive in nature, though it does allow Kirby to land solid blows on foes if he falls on them from above, and also allows him to pound down stakes and break metal blocks. Depending on the game, Stone Kirby may have other attacks or properties, such as being able to walk around slowly, having an "uppercut" punch attack, or creating a big shockwave upon landing. Many games give Kirby a variety of solid objects to turn into at random when he uses his Stone Change, some rarer than others and many being references to other characters or objects.

Stone first appeared in Kirby's Adventure, and is typically provided by Rocky or Blocky. Other rarer providers of the ability include Gansan, Cairn, Hack, Golem, and Moundo. Certain boss attacks, like those of Fatty Whale, Wham Bam Rock, King Golem, Moley or Clanky Woods, may also provide the ability.

Characteristics[edit]

Stone Kirby making use of one of his main emergent properties - the ability to roll down slopes - in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror

Stone is among the simplest and most straightforward of Kirby's Copy Abilities, though it has a lot of variants and emergent uses. In its simplest form, Kirby transforms into a solid immobile object which is affected only by gravity. In this state, Kirby becomes immune to all but the strongest enemy attacks, though this is counterbalanced by the fact that his movement options become extremely limited if not completely absent. Due to the amount of time it often takes for Kirby to use his Stone Change, whether turning into the stone or transforming back to normal, it is often impractical to use Stone offensively, particularly during boss fights. When transformed, Stone Kirby falls extremely quickly, which is useful for certain vertical stage sections, but Kirby should be careful not to fall too far in many places, as he might be lost to a bottomless pit before he can change back. Falling into a hazardous area like a spike pit can also be problematic, as Kirby is basically guaranteed to take a hit as soon as he transforms back. One other notable aspect of Stone Kirby in most of his appearances is his ability to slide down slopes, which can be used in many cases to travel quickly and safely through tight tunnels packed with enemies. Stone Kirby's heavy weight also allows him to quickly sink in water, pound Stakes, and break metal blocks.

While the above describes Stone Kirby in most of his appearances, there are several games where there are notable differences in how the Stone ability functions. In Stone's debut in Kirby's Adventure (as well as the remake, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land) for instance, Kirby does not slide on slopes. In Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Stone Kirby transforms into a full statue of himself that is still able to roll and walk around, but cannot jump. In Kirby's Dream Buffet, Stone Kirby is more of an offensive power, with the main attack coming from the big shockwave produced by the impact. Stone can also be readily combined with other powers or partners in the Shinichi Shimomura-directed games and in Kirby Star Allies, with the most notable example being the Curling transformation.

Appearance[edit]

Stone's initial hat was introduced in Kirby Super Star, where it is a purple helmet with a red ponytail on its top. Its front features a golden plate with three stars, and the helmet also extends on Kirby's back as some sort of cape but still hard. This hat design is the same as Ninja's, just with different colors. This hat design would be reused in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, and Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, as well as in Kirby Super Star Ultra. Kirby: Right Back at Ya! features a similar design, although the hat's plate on the front is simplified, and is only a single star.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land introduced a completely new hat for Stone, that would become its main design for every game and media released afterwards with no major changes. The hat is made of brown boulders in the shape of crystals, in a similar vein to Ice's hat, a headband on the front that contains smaller cubic rocks in the colors purple, pink, and orange, with two horns, each on a side of the headband. This hat is notably similar to the Stone hat that would be present in the cancelled Kirby for Nintendo GameCube.

In Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra, Kirby's body and feet also turn brown when he has the ability. In Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Kirby's body changes to a more beige color. In Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, Kirby's body becomes a shade of gray.

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

Using Stone, Kirby can pound stakes to open up certain barriers.

Stone makes its debut along with the concept of Copy Abilities themselves in Kirby's Adventure. This game establishes Stone as an ability that causes Kirby to transform into a rock, and plummet downward, becoming all but invulnerable and dealing damage on impact. However, Stone Kirby's signature ability to slide down slopes is not present in this game, nor is it in the remake, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Kirby also only has one form here, that being a pink-ish rock with a level bottom and two closed eyes on it. The ability is provided solely by Rocky or via a Mix. Stone deals 10 damage in this title. [1]

Kirby's Dream Course[edit]

Stone returns in Kirby's Dream Course, where it functions similar to the Needle ability. When used, Stone causes Kirby to stop moving, and this can also be used in midair to force Kirby to fall straight down. However, if Kirby lands on a slope, he will slowly slide down it. The ability is obtained from Rocky.

Notably, in the 2P Game, when Stone is used, it will be held during the opponent's turn, even if a different ability was acquired while using the Stone form. Additionally, while in Stone form, attacks from the other player can be resisted. Stone cannot be used to protect against hazards such as Gordos, however.

Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]

Kirby making use of the Stone and Rick combination in Kirby's Dream Land 2

Stone returns as an ability in Kirby's Dream Land 2, where it now gains the ability to roll quickly down slopes, a features that would persist for the remainder of the series (barring a few absences here and there). Stone can be obtained in this game via Rocky or the mid-boss Blocky.

When on an Animal Friend, Kirby can perform variations of the ability, as detailed in the following table:

Animal Friend Appearance Description
Coo
Kirby turns to stone, causing the duo to plummet to the ground.
Kine
Lets Kirby assume his stone form inside Kine, making him sink downwards and defeat enemies.
Rick
Kirby balances on top of Rick as the hamster turns into a rolling boulder, crushing all enemies in their path.

Throughout Kirby's Dream Land 2, there are specific blocks which can be broken only with the Stone ability. They are depicted as fragile-looking.

Kirby's Block Ball[edit]

The ball drops down, crushing the blocks below.
— Kirby's Block Ball North American instruction booklet

Stone appears as one of the four abilities in Kirby's Block Ball, obtainable from Rocky or an Ability Changer item. When Kirby uses this ability, he transforms into a stone and falls straight down, crushing lesser blocks along the way until he hits a harder object or the paddle. The Burning ability can be said to be the opposite of Stone in this game, since it travels straight up rather than straight down for the same effect.

Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

Kirby Super Star introduced randomized Stone transformations. In this case, Kirby transformed into the 8-ton weight.

In Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra, Stone can be obtained from Rockys and the boulders appearing during the battle against Fatty Whale and Wham Bam Rock. Kirby's visual appearance changes by turning brown and wearing a helmet with a tail on top.

Upon using the ability, Kirby randomly turns into one of a wide variety of objects. In the original Kirby Super Star, Kirby can turn into the default pink rock from Kirby's Adventure, a star block, an eight-ton weight, a stone statue of himself, a Macho Statue, and rare gold statues of Mario and Samus Aran; the remake adds Mount Fuji, an iron fist, statues of Rick, Kine and Coo, a Thudd, a Brick Block, and the rare gold Dream Hatcher (HAL Laboratory's logo). While transformed, Kirby is completely invincible, but cannot move unless sliding down a slope. Pressing the B button while in stone form returns Kirby to his usual self.

With the stone ability equipped, Kirby can create a Rocky as a helper, which possesses the same skills as Stone Kirby does.

Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]

Kirby and ChuChu combining for a Stone attack in Kirby's Dream Land 3

Stone appears again in Kirby's Dream Land 3, where it looks and functions much like in Kirby's Dream Land 2. Rocky and Blocky once again provide the ability, along with a new enemy called Gansan as well as the club-wielding Bukiset. The inclusion of more animal friends gave more possibilities for combinations:

Animal Friend Appearance Description
ChuChu Kirby transforms into a boulder and ChuChu proceeds to start swinging him around. The two can travel back and forth while doing this maneuver, damaging enemies on contact.
Coo
Kirby turns to stone, causing the duo to plummet to the ground. Holding the B button causes Coo to lift Kirby, where they can move slowly in the air.
Kine

Nago Pressing and holding the Y button causes Kirby to change into his stone form while Nago pounds the ground with him, harming opponents in front of him. Nago cannot move while using this ability.
Pitch
Kirby and Pitch leap into the air, the latter temporarily turning into a rock on the way down and squishing foes under him.
Rick
Kirby balances on top of Rick as the hamster turns into a rolling boulder, crushing all enemies in their path.

Throughout Kirby's Dream Land 3, there are specific blocks which can be broken only with the Stone ability. They are marked with the Stone icon on them.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

In Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Kirby's stone form is more mobile, since he keeps his limbs.

Stone appears in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, where it takes on a slightly different form. Here, instead of simply becoming a stone and falling, Kirby turns into a rounded boulder, falls to the ground, and then morphs into a stone version of himself and starts walking around. In this form, he is invulnerable, but cannot jump, and rolls automatically down hills. Stone can additionally be combined with other abilities or itself to produce varying results. Pairing Stone with itself has the same effect as Stone on its own, but makes Kirby's transformation much larger. Other combinations include fusing Stone and Ice to turn Kirby into a sliding Curling stone, pairing Stone with Burning to turn Kirby into a little volcano, combining Stone with Cutter to turn Kirby into statues of the Animal Friends that have their own unique abilities, and combining Stone with Needle to give Kirby a drill that drags him along and can be shot through walls.

Stone has a large number of providers in this game. Among them are Rocky, Cairn, Hack, and Pompey.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]

Stone appears as an ability in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror. In this game, Kirby's Stone transformation resembles the rounder version in Kirby's Dream Land 2 and Kirby's Dream Land 3, which rolls down slopes quickly. In addition, its color will change depending on the color of the Spray Paint that Kirby has. Stone can be obtained from Rocky, Giant Rocky and Golem.

The Smash ability can also use the Stone Change, which functions the same.

Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]

Stone Kirby returns in Kirby: Canvas Curse, once again provided by Rocky. In this appearance, Kirby transforms into a well-polished faceted stone gem and falls straight downward, defeating enemies and crushing metal blocks below. Stone Kirby cannot ride up a Rainbow Line while in Stone form. In addition, Stone Kirby will automatically sink in water, making the ability useful for traversing flooded areas.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land[edit]

Stone Kirby sliding down a slope in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

After being absent from Kirby: Squeak Squad, Stone returns in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, where it can be obtained from Rocky and the mid-boss Moundo and has gained new moves that allow for it to be used in a more varied manner. Apart from the traditional power to turn to stone and slide down hills, Kirby may now transform into a bigger-than-normal statue and slam onto the ground with great force, as well as use a powerful low-range uppercut attack that knocks enemies into the air. The latter is also the first Stone move in the history of the series that does not transform Kirby's entire body. Stone Kirby gets a new hat starting in this game, which is a set of rocks on a purple, pink, and orange base with a pair of horns.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

Stone returns in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, bearing the same characteristics it had in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. However, three notable changes were made. Firstly, Stone Uppercut was changed so that it can be charged to deal more damage. Secondly, if Kirby tries to dash while in Stone form, he will pivot in that form slightly. This can be done to change the angle from which the player can see the stone sculpture that Kirby changes into. This technique deals no damage, and is only there for cosmetic purposes. Finally, starting in this game, Heavy Smash is able to move horizontally in the air during startup unlike in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, which disallows horizontal movement after the first few frames.

Stone Kirby also appears as four keychains, one using his sprite from Kirby's Adventure, another showing him as the "Macho Statue" from Kirby Super Star, the third showing his sprite from Kirby: Canvas Curse, and the fourth showing him as the "Dream Hatcher" transformation from Kirby Super Star Ultra.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

In Kirby Star Allies, when combined with a Blizzard attack, Stone Kirby transforms into the Curling stone and can slide much more quickly down slopes while leaving a trail of ice behind.

Stone returns in Kirby Star Allies, retaining its essential functions from previous installments. It can also be used in a number of Friend Abilities; most notably the varieties of Curling and Geokinesis. Rocky returns as the ability's main provider, and can be recruited as a friend with all of Stone Kirby's abilities. Gooey and Rick also have their own Stone transformations which can interact with Friend Abilities.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

Stone Kirby emanating a shockwave in Kirby's Dream Buffet

Stone Kirby reappears in Kirby's Dream Buffet as a Copy Food ability, available only in Battle Royale stages and activated by using the Stone Chocolate Copy Food. When activated, Kirby turns into a chocolate bar and pounds the ground, creating a shockwave that launches opponents into the air and knocks them back. If the player holds R while activating the ability, a bigger shockwave is produced. Despite Stone's usual reputation for being nearly invincible, Stone Kirby cannot resist another Kirby using Invincible Candy or being grabbed by the tongs.

Stone Kirby also appears in a more traditional form as a Character Treat, depicting his sprite from Kirby's Adventure.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

Stone appears in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, as it did in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. In this remake, the ability was given its larger moveset introduced in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, including Mighty Uppercut and Spin.

Stone moveset in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
Move Button Execution Description
Stone Change
B/Y
Kirby transforms into a random, invincible statue that is stationary on the ground, or immediately plummets when used in the air. Ending this effect causes rock shards to fly away, which can harm enemies.
Stone Smash
B/Y in midair
Kirby transforms into a random statue and falls straight down, pounding stakes into the ground and dealing damage to enemies he collides with.
Turbo Stone
Dash + B/Y
Changes into stone out of a dash, leaving some momentum for Kirby to slide into his opponents on the ground.
Block most enemy attacks as a stone!
Heavy Smash
↓ + B/Y in midair
Kirby transforms into a larger statue and pauses in the air for a bit before slamming straight down with greater force. Using this directly above an enemy causes Kirby to deal additional damage while transforming.
Stone Uppercut
↑ + tap B/Y
Kirby performs an uppercut directly in front of him with a fist made of stone, dealing damage and catapulting enemies into the air.
Mighty Uppercut
↑ and hold B/Y
Kirby performs a longer and more powerful version of Stone Uppercut.
Slope Slide
B/Y on a slope
Kirby will slide down slopes while in Stone form, which will damage any enemies he slides into.
Spin
Try to Dash while transformed
Kirby will pivot in his form slightly. This can be done to change the angle from which the player can see the stone sculpture that Kirby changes into.

Stone sculpture forms[edit]

The ability has new statues it can transform into, including a handful from Kirby Star Allies, as well as two new sculptures referencing Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Kirby's Dream Buffet. The Mount Fuji and Rick, Kine, & Coo statues have been replaced with their Kirby Star Allies equivalents.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

In all of the installments of the Super Smash Bros. series, Kirby's down special move is the Stone ability, and behaves exactly as it does in Kirby's Adventure. Starting with Melee, Kirby transforms into various objects: the default pink rock, a 100-ton weight, a spiked ball, a Thwomp from the Mario universe, Lip's garbage block from Panel de Pon, and in Ultimate, a Treasure Chest from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There are a few key differences in the Super Smash Bros. series, however: Kirby can only remain in stone form for a short period of time, he is vulnerable to grabs, and he may still be harmed if he is hit by a powerful enough attack.

Two custom moves can also be used in place of the original once unlocked in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. The first, Grounding Stone, has Kirby take a bit longer to transform before falling, but he can bury opponents into the ground when hit. The second, Meteor Stone, can meteor smash opponents when hit, with Kirby taking longer to transform back to normal upon pressing the special attack button again or after a certain amount of time passes.

Stone Kirby makes a few appearances in the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, first appearing in the second episode, A Blockbuster Battle. In the anime, Kirby gains a grayish coloration and hat similar to Stone's appearance in Kirby Super Star. When Kirby transforms, he turns into a large, pink, blocky version of himself which is able to walk around, similar to how Stone functions in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Even without being actively transformed, however, Stone Kirby still packs a wallop with body slam attacks, as he is much heavier than he normally is.

Other appearances[edit]

While the Stone ability itself is absent in Kirby Fighters 2, Gooey's moveset in that game includes the Stone Change move.

Trivia[edit]

  • Kirby: Squeak Squad and Kirby and the Forgotten Land are the only main-series games since the introduction of Copy Abilities in Kirby's Adventure that do not feature Stone in any capacity.
    • Kirby: Squeak Squad features an ability called Metal, which behaves somewhat like Stone, but still allows Kirby to move and hover (very slowly), making it similar to Stone's incarnation in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.
    • The Cone Mouth Mouthful Mode in Kirby and the Forgotten Land also behaves somewhat like Stone, though it limits Kirby's movement options.
  • Originally, Kirby was going to be able to jump while transformed with this ability in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, but it was changed before the game's final release for unknown reasons.[3]
