Magma Flows is the fifth course in the Air Ride mode of Kirby Air Ride, also available as an unlockable course in Kirby Air Riders. The course takes place on a jagged track among fields of molten lava through lots of branching pathways. It is one of the longer and more complex courses, and the default number of laps run on it is two.
Overview[edit]
Track[edit]
The overall track shape for Magma Flows is that of a somewhat distorted triangle, or piece of flint. The starting line is at the bottom of the track near the middle of the left bump, and the course runs in a counterclockwise manner from there. First the racers must make their way around two wide curves in the road before reaching the first set of Dash Panels. From there, another wide turn is made with a rail girdling the outer edge and heading underneath the previous portion of the track before reaching a ramp that leads over a pool of magma into a tight canyon. From there, the path splits into three rocky channels which can be accessed using a rail that changes direction. The channels intersect in various places, but ultimately lead to the same output as the racers make their way across some islands in flowing lava before reaching a long conveyor belt that takes them up into a volcano.
Once at the top of the conveyor belt, there are three rails that can be taken which dive into the volcano and lead to different caves. Depending on which cave is entered, the racers will end up on either an upper or lower path leading out into the next region, which is a huge chasm of lava patrolled by flaming dragons. There are Dash Panels along the floor of this chasm, as well as one on a floating platform in the middle. Upon reaching the other side, the racers must move across a split rocky path, making two more sharp turns before reaching one more river of lava, which has moving islands inside, some of which have Dash Panels on them. From there, two more Dash Panels can be taken to return to the finish line and complete a lap.
Setting and enemies[edit]
Magma Flows takes place in a hot magmatic region devoid of living plants, lined with horn-like pillars which spew lava out the tops. Contrary to expectation, the lava itself is not capable of harming the racers, as they merely ride over or bounce off it as if it were solid ground. The course is rugged and jagged, with lots of igneous rock canyons and caves. The only hazards here that can hurt the racers are the flaming dragons that burst from the big lava chasm near the end, though being hit by one is such a novelty that there is a Checklist objective devoted to the action.
The course is pretty heavily populated with enemies, though notably, there are no Waddle Dees here. The most common ability-providing enemies here are Sword Knight, Heat Phanphan, and Flappy. Noddys also appear here at a somewhat higher rate than on most other courses. Gordos will appear on the track during the second and third laps in Time Attack mode.
