Keychains are items that can be collected in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. They, while not required to complete the game, are required for 100% completion. Keychains are hidden throughout the main Story Mode, but can also be found in the Story Mode Goal Game, Dededetour, in both The Arena and The True Arena, and can be obtained via spending 3DS Play Coins, though this is by no means required. To keep any obtained keychains, Kirby (or King Dedede) has to complete whatever stage or mode he is in where he got them.

Description[edit]

An example of keychains appearing in a themed group on the main menu. In this case, the theme is final bosses from different games: Nightmare's Power Orb, Dark Mind, Dark Matter, and Nightmare Wizard.

Before collection, keychains resemble silver, floating baubles with a blue core, having question marks on said cores. Connecting the main body and a star-shaped key ring is a metal ball chain (gold for the rarer counterpart). Keychains represent various sprites from earlier sprite-based 2D Kirby adventures (as well as original artwork representing characters from non-sprite-based games Kirby's Epic Yarn, Kirby's Return to Dream Land, and Kirby: Triple Deluxe). Keychains can be viewed and looked at in closer detail in the Keychain Collection menu, accessible from either the file select screen or the Story Mode World Map.

Design-wise, several of the keychains are not identical to the original sprites and actually contain subtle differences. This is because, when the designers were searching for assets to use from previous titles, they were unable to find certain sprites and had to re-draw them from scratch (something which also applies to the Giant Scrolls in Lollipop Land - Stage 2 and Royal Road - Stage 8 EX).[1]

There are 256 keychains in total, and they come in two types: normal and rare (which are golden-colored with a rainbow core, and have golden wings in addition). Once the stage or mode is complete, any collected keychains will be uncovered and added to the collection. Normal keychains are randomly obtained. Generally, the selection will favor new kinds of keychains, but it is possible to obtain the same type of keychain more than once. Rare keychains are unique, however, and can be found only in particular places in Story Mode, one in each stage (excluding boss stages). After a rare keychain is collected, subsequent visits to that stage will have a normal keychain in its spot; therefore, only one of each rare keychain can typically be collected.

Additionally, keychains can be shared with other players via StreetPass, as one of the items thrown out by Bandana Waddle Dee. Doing so will occasionally allow the player to obtain a rare keychain, in addition to normal keychains. Once 10 of the same keychain have been collected, no more duplicates of that keychain will appear; this is indicated in the Keychain Collection by its standard green pin being replaced by an orange star-shaped pin. Because duplicate rare keychains can be obtained via dedicated StreetPassing, it is possible, though difficult, to obtain the star-shaped pin for a rare keychain.

Formations[edit]

Main article: Keychain/Formations

Keychains can also be seen on the main menu, with a selection of keychains unique to each file appearing on the top screen. They start out randomly selected, but as the game progresses and more keychains are collected, they will begin to appear in formations following a pre-set theme (for example, characters from the same game, or different varieties of a particular character). For more information about keychain formations, see here.

In both the main menu and the Keychain Collection menu, keychains are affected by the 3DS gyroscope and will tilt and jingle with proper respect to gravity.

Ranks[edit]

The game will give the player a rank depending on how many different varieties of keychains were collected. They are as follows:

  • 1 - 24 keychains - Amateur Collector
  • 25 - 49 keychains - Fair-Weather Collector
  • 50 - 99 keychains - Keychain Hunter
  • 100 - 149 keychains - Dream Land Bandit
  • 150 - 199 keychains - Kirby Maniac
  • 200 - 249 keychains - Legendary Collector
  • 250 - 255 keychains - Superstar Collector
  • 256 keychains - Keychain Master

When the Keychain Master rank is obtained, the Keychain Collection menu music changes from the standard theme to the "Hypernova All-Stars" theme.

List[edit]

The following is a list of every keychain in the game, including the locations of each rare keychain. The list details what the keychain represents, which game it came from, and any additional notes. Names listed after a "/" indicate the British English name of the keychain in question.

In other games[edit]

In Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe, a hidden keychain appears in each stage. The normal stages all have a keychain that depicts Kirby's sprite from Kirby's Adventure, while the extra stages have a wider variety of characters.

Kracko and King Dedede both utilize keychains as part of their movesets in Kirby Fighters Deluxe, tossing them against the screen to obscure the player's view. In Dedede's case, he will always throw out keychains that depict himself; in Very Hard mode, he will throw out keychains that do not appear in Kirby: Triple Deluxe.

Trivia[edit]

  • Keychains are one of the two categories of Kirby badges in Nintendo Badge Arcade, featuring all of the keychains from Kirby: Triple Deluxe.
  • If the player rotates the keychain while viewing it, the back of the Keychain always bears the HAL Laboratory logo somewhere on it, usually in the middle if it will fit there.
  • Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards is the only main series game not represented with a keychain, while Kirby: Canvas Curse, Kirby's Epic Yarn, and Kirby Mass Attack are the only spin-offs represented.
  • In the American English version of the game, Kirby & The Amazing Mirror is formatted with a lowercase "the" in the Keychain Collection.
  • Kirby Super Star is not referred to as Kirby's Fun Pak in the British English version, though it is in all the other European-language localizations.

"For the characters that appear in the Giant Scrolls that Kirby unrolls using Hypernova Inhale, we had a search inside the company for pixel assets and 3D models from previous games, and found some that we were able to reuse. However, we never did manage to find the assets for the background from the very first Kirby game. In the end, we got a designer who has worked on the Kirby titles for a long time to draw fresh assets from scratch!" –Tadashi Kamitake (Miiverse)
