Play all your fave Kirby music! The Jukebox is now unlocked!
— Kirby Star Allies unlock quote
The Jukebox from Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe.

The Jukebox (also referred to as the Sound Test, or different names in each game) is a special menu in various Kirby games that allows the player to listen to the music and/or sound effects of a given title. It is usually unlocked by clearing the Story Mode, an Extra Mode, or by attaining 100% completion. The Jukebox usually features Kirby wearing headphones, listening alongside the player.

In early games, the Sound Tests were often somewhat haphazard, sometimes being listed in hexadecimal and usually being presented in a different order from the official soundtracks, or the order in which the player may normally encounter the tracks while playing the game. Starting in Kirby Super Star, the Sound Test track lists are made more deliberate, and the menus are made more stylistic and user-friendly. In Kirby Mass Attack, Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Kirby: Planet Robobot, the Jukebox lets the player listen to music with headphones while the system is in sleep mode, like a traditional music player. In Kirby Mass Attack, the player can even cycle through tracks with the L and R buttons without needing to open the system.

In main-series games starting with Kirby: Triple Deluxe in addition to Kirby Battle Royale, the Jukebox has an auto-play function that allows the player to listen to multiple tracks in order after each one ends, like a playlist, instead of having the selected track looping indefinitely.

Composer credits[edit]

Most games in the series do not credit the composers of each track by name. However, there is a hidden system in certain games where the composer of each track is credited by the color of the music notes that appear in the Jukebox.[1] This system has appeared in most games starting with Kirby: Triple Deluxe. When a track is playing, the musical notes will change color to indicate its composer, as follows:

  • Hirokazu Ando
    • Blue music notes (since Kirby: Triple Deluxe)
  • Jun Ishikawa
    • Red music notes (most games since Kirby: Triple Deluxe)
    • Magenta music notes (Kirby Star Allies and Kirby and the Forgotten Land)
  • Yuuta Ogasawara
    • Yellow music notes (since Kirby Star Allies)
  • Yuki Shimooka
    • Green music notes (since Kirby and the Forgotten Land)
  • Megumi Ohara
    • Orange music notes (since Kirby's Dream Buffet)
  • Shogo Sakai
    • Lavender music notes (Kirby's Dream Buffet)
    • Magenta music notes (Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World)
  • Tadashi Ikegami
    • Indigo music notes (since Kirby's Dream Buffet)
  • Yuki Kato
    • Purple music notes (Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World)
  • White notes have been used since Kirby's Dream Buffet to represent non-HAL Laboratory composers, such as Kiyoshi Hazemoto.
  • Rainbow notes are used in Kirby's Dream Buffet to represent the HAL Laboratory Dream Band.

In Kirby's Dream Buffet, nearly all music tracks (with the exceptions of "To the Dream Buffet, with the Dream Fork", "The Final Course of the Feast!" and "Invincible Candy") have note color values assigned to them, even ones that are not accessible in the Gourmet Rank menu; note colors not visible in-game can still be seen through datamining. In most games, the shapes of the notes are random; in Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World, Yuki Shimooka and Yuki Kato are both represented by eighth notes, while all other composers are represented with quarter notes.

When unlocked, it can be accessed after selecting a file. 58 of the game's music and 88 sound effects can be listened to separately here. The title illustration of Kirby will gain headphones, and start jumping around as if bobbing to the beat. The following table lists every music track in the Sound Test of Kirby's Adventure. Kirby's Dream Course[edit]

The Sound Room in the international versions of Kirby's Dream Course, showing the highest tracks.

The Sound Room is unlocked in Kirby's Dream Course after getting at least a bronze medal on every Extra Game course. It is made available to select from the title screen, and allows the player to listen to 32 distinct music tracks (referred to as BGM) and 125 sound effects (referred to as FGM). 000 does not correspond to any tracks in this game, and some of the BGM are lengthier sound effects, rather than proper music.

It is also possible to access each of these music tracks and sound effects through a Debug Mode in the Japanese version. The Debug Mode shows the internal development name given to every single music track and sound effect.

The following table lists every music track in the Sound Room of the international versions of Kirby's Dream Course. The table, however, omits the music track that plays during the opening story cutscene exclusive to the Japanese version, which is located as BGM 005 in that version's Sound Room after the title screen theme. Note that music names are conjectural unless otherwise specified:

Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]

The Sound Test in the international (top) and Japanese (bottom) versions of Kirby's Dream Land 2.

The Sound Test is unlocked in Kirby's Dream Land 2 after getting 100% completion, at which point it becomes one of the options available after selecting a file. 47 music tracks and 98 sound effects can be listened to separately here. An illustration shows Kirby and the Animal Friends sitting at a booth in a bar, while Gooey watches and the Girl blob plays piano in the background. In the Japanese version, Gooey is missing, and the Girl blob is replaced by Chao. This is a reference to an identical scene in Yūyūki—Chao's game of origin. Here, music is referred to as "BGM", and sound effects are referred to as "FGM", though some music is also listed under "FGM".

Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

With so many famous songs and sounds, think of all the fun you'll have listening to them all here!
— Kirby Super Star Ultra Sound Test menu description
The Sound Test in Kirby Super Star.
The Sound Test in Kirby Super Star Ultra.

In the original Kirby Super Star, the Sound Test is unlocked after clearing The Arena, and features an illustration of Kirby in a conductor's outfit. All 65 of the game's music tracks can be listened to here, in addition to 248 sound effects. Music tracks can be made to play automatically by pressing the shoulder buttons.

In Kirby Super Star Ultra, the Sound Test is unlocked after clearing Milky Way Wishes, allowing access to 110 music tracks and 423 sound effects. The illustration of Kirby in the conductor's outfit is retained, but the music and sound options are available on the bottom screen; the top screen has a visualizer instead. Not all music and sounds are available at the start, with some tracks unlocking after clearing certain modes.

In both games, the option is accessible via the Corkboard menu. The full music track listing for both game's Sound Tests can be seen on this page.

Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]

The Sound Test in Kirby's Dream Land 3.

The Sound Test is part of the Sound menu in Kirby's Dream Land 3; while this menu is available on each file from the start, the option to play back the 43 music tracks and 185 sound effects is only unlocked after defeating King Dedede, regardless of which ending is obtained. When this occurs, the title of the menu will change from "Sound" to "Sound Test". Music is "BGM" and sound effects are "SFX" in English and "FGM" in Japanese. The game's Debug Menu also has its own sound test called the "Music Room", which includes internal development names for all the songs and sound effects; these names are stored in ASCII in the game's ROM.

The following lists every music track in the Sound Test for Kirby's Dream Land 3. Conjectural track names are marked with an asterisk (*), while some track names are taken from other official sources:

Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]

The Sound Test in Kirby: Canvas Curse

In Kirby: Canvas Curse, the Sound Test is available from the beginning as part of the options menu. However, not all tracks are immediately available to hear. While music 00-23 and 25-39 and sounds 000-294 are available from the start, some tracks are unlocked once the player defeats Drawcia Soul for the first time, while others must be purchased through Medal Swap. In particular, 200 Medals are needed to unlock the ability to buy "Hidden Song", the "Old School" option for stage music, with 50 of those medals needing to be spent to actually purchase it.

  • Tracks 24 and 40-44 are unlocked after defeating Drawcia Soul.
  • Tracks 45-57 are unlocked after purchasing "Song 1" in the Medal Swap. They correspond to Classic Song 1 tracks.
  • Tracks 58-67 are unlocked after purchasing "Song 2" in the Medal Swap. They correspond to Classic Song 2 tracks.
  • Tracks 68-77 are unlocked after purchasing "Song 3" in the Medal Swap. They correspond to Classic Song 3 tracks.

The following table lists every music track in the Sound Test of Kirby: Canvas Curse. Note that most Classic Songs will only play if the "Old School" setting is chosen in the "Settings" menu:

Kirby's Epic Yarn / Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn[edit]

The Tunes list in Kirby's Epic Yarn.

The Sound Test, here named Tunes, is part of Patch Plaza in Quilty Court in both Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn. It is available from the start, but music must be unlocked by collecting the CD Treasure in each stage. CDs are also earned automatically when clearing boss stages. Not every song is available as a CD, because there are only 50 stages to collect music in. 52 total tracks are available in both versions of the game, with Yin-Yarn yielding three CDs upon defeat.

In the British English version, most of the stage themes are appended with "Theme from (stage)", while the boss themes are appended with "(boss)'s Theme". For convenience's sake, only the American English names will be listed, with significant translation differences noted separately.

The following is a list of songs available in Tunes in Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn:

Kirby Mass Attack[edit]

The Music Player in Kirby Mass Attack

The Music Player is unlocked in Kirby Mass Attack after collecting 10 Medals. Music is not unlocked for playback until it is encountered in the game itself, although clearing the Story Mode and seeing the credits will unlock each and every track, even if not encountered before. Notably, each track in this game has a unique title that is given in the Music Player, and tracks are not given numbers.

The track list for the Music Player can be found on this page.

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, the Sound Test is unlocked in the game's Main Menu once the Main Mode is cleared, allowing one to listen to 115 music tracks and 1,427 sound effects. Music tracks 97 to 115 are locked until after clearing Extra Mode 100%. This game is also the last to include a section dedicated to sound effects; later entries are dedicated solely to music. Additionally, the Sound Test starts out as pink, but when all music tracks are unlocked, it turns rainbow-colored, and the title adds stars.

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, it is now known as the Jukebox. It no longer includes sound effects, but it now includes an auto-play function, colored music notes indicating the composer, and track titles. Interestingly, its unlock quote still references being able to listen to sound effects, even though the option to do so is not present.

The music track lists for the Sound Test in Kirby's Return to Dream Land and the Jukebox in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe can be found on this page.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

You've unlocked Sound Test, where you can listen to all of your favorite game music!
— Kirby: Triple Deluxe unlock quote
The Jukebox in Kirby: Triple Deluxe.

The Sound Test, also referred to as the Jukebox, returns in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, serving the same purpose as usual. It is unlocked after clearing Dededetour. As the name implies, it takes the form of a traditional jukebox with the likeness of Hypernova Kirby, which lights up when music is playing. In the background, images of the Dreamstalk and a Waddle Dee at Kirby's House can be seen.

This game is the first to introduce an Auto mode, which will automatically play through all the tracks in sequence, which would become standard in subsequent titles. This can even keep going while the console is in Sleep Mode. This is also the first game to use specific-colored music notes to represent who composed each track: blue for Hirokazu Ando and red for Jun Ishikawa.

The track listing for the Jukebox can be seen on this page.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse[edit]

Collect 'em all! Then listen to 'em all again and again!
— In-game caption from Kirby and the Rainbow Curse after collecting the first music track

The Sound Test is named the Music Room in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, and is unlocked after collecting a music track for the first time. Individual tracks must be unlocked by either defeating the boss of a level, which will unlock all of the level's tracks, or by collecting specific Treasures, which will unlock remixes of music from previous Kirby games that are exclusive to the Music Room. The Music Room will play each song automatically in sequence, and additionally has a playlist feature, where the player can choose specific songs to listen to. Mike Kirby can be seen listening and bopping along from side to side while music is playing. Like in Kirby Mass Attack, each track in this game has a unique title that is given in the Music Room.

The track listing for the Music Room can be seen on this page.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

Your favorite tunes on demand! The Jukebox is now open.
— Kirby: Planet Robobot unlock quote
The Jukebox in Kirby: Planet Robobot

The Jukebox returns once again in Kirby: Planet Robobot, unchanged from Kirby: Triple Deluxe other than its aesthetics. It is unlocked after clearing Meta Knightmare Returns. A holographic image of Kirby wearing headphones appears on the top screen, which can rarely change into an 8-bit Kirby sprite from Kirby's Adventure.

The track listing for the Jukebox can be seen on this page.

Kirby Battle Royale[edit]

The music collection menu in Kirby Battle Royale.

In Kirby Battle Royale, music must be purchased with Battle Coins in the Collection, with all songs costing 400 Battle Coins each. Music will only be available for purchase when it is heard at least once in-game. When purchased, it will become available to listen to in the Music Collection. Mike Kirby, who is not otherwise present in this game, appears as part of this menu.

The player can press X to change the repeat function, whether it will be for one song, all unlocked songs in list order, or on shuffle. All songs have a progress bar which also show their duration; as a consequence, those that normally loop indefinitely only loop twice before fading out even if the player has chosen the option to repeat one song. Unlike other Jukeboxes, the player can pause and resume the music while it is playing.

The following is a list of music tracks that appear in the Kirby Battle Royale Collection menu:

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

The Jukebox from Kirby Star Allies.

In the Jukebox for Kirby Star Allies, a graphic of Kirby along with his friends can be seen playing in a band, with Kirby on the mike, a Burning Leo on guitar, a Waddle Doo on bass, and a Waddle Dee on percussion. If the player presses any buttons not pertaining to the menu while a song is playing, it will cause the band to 'play' their instruments. After Heroes in Another Dimension is cleared with the true ending, the original band will sometimes be replaced with Kirby backed by The Three Mage-Sisters, using modified versions of their weapons as instruments.[2] Kirby Star Allies: The Original Soundtrack has the exact same music from the Jukebox, but presented in a different order.

The Jukebox in this game is unlocked after clearing Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!. Tracks related to The Three Mage-Sisters as a Dream Friend, Morpho Knight's Dream Friend battle music, Heroes in Another Dimension, The Ultimate Choice's Soul Melter EX difficulty, and the DLC Celebration Pictures must be unlocked before they can be listened to in the Jukebox.

The track listing for the Jukebox can be found on this page.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land / Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World[edit]

Looks like this band is taking requests! What should we ask them to play?
— Elfilin, regarding The Deedly Dees
The "Waddle Live! Corner Stage" in Waddle Dee Town acts as Kirby and the Forgotten Land's version of the Jukebox.

In Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World, there is a band named The Deedly Dees in Waddle Dee Town, who play at the Waddle Live! Corner Stage. Their overall function is similar to that of previous games' Jukeboxes, as they play music tracks that the player has heard during the game, and can play successive tracks in "Auto" mode like a playlist.

The band consists of four Waddle Dees playing guitar, bass, keyboard, and drums; they play in time to the music, and only when their respective instruments are playing, and Kirby, Elfilin, and Bandana Waddle Dee dance to the beat. The music plays continuously throughout Waddle Dee Town when selected. When no track is selected, The Deedly Dees play around with their instruments by plucking and tuning strings, pressing muted keys or striking the cymbals. Each music track has its own name that is displayed on-screen while it's playing, the first instance of this in the main series.

The Deedly Dees first appear in Waddle Dee Town after completing Lab Discovera, though not all of the tracks are available at first; when certain thresholds are met, Kirby can donate Star Coins to upgrade the stage and unlock more tracks (1000 for the first upgrade, 2000 for the second upgrade).

In the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, the new tracks associated with Star-Crossed World can be heard after completing the Star-Crossed World level. Additional tracks are unlocked by clearing The Ultimate Cup Z EX at the Colosseum, or by reaching other milestones.

Tracks with multiple variations use unique medley versions at the corner stage. Not every track in the game can be listened to at the corner stage. Tracks missing include jingles for unlocking content or clearing or failing minigames, various ambient noises within certain stages, cutscenes, the Colosseum, or the world map, and the title themes associated with Past Adventures in Kirby's House.

The full track listing for the Corner Stage can be seen on this page.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

Main article: Gourmet Rank

In Kirby's Dream Buffet, the Gourmet Rank rewards menu acts as a sort of Jukebox, as it can be used to listen to the songs unlocked through gameplay, and uses the same note color differentiation as the main series' Jukeboxes. However, not all the songs are available in this menu, and it lacks some of the features seen in previous games, such as Auto mode. For more details, see the Gourmet Rank page.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

In Kirby Air Riders, the Music Player is represented by a smartphone, and is available from the start, though a good number of tracks needs to be unlocked in various ways. The game also features "My Music", that sets the frequency of certain tracks playing during a City Trial match.

The track listing for the Music Player and more details about it can be found on this page.

The music in the Kirby series is created by two different composers. The songs with the red musical notes were composed by someone who's been on board since Kirby's Dream Land. The blue notes appear for songs created by the second composer, who joined the team for Kirby's Adventure." --Shinya Kumazaki, quoted by Satoshi Ishida, retrieved from Miiverse - イシダ's post - Nintendo (Wayback Machine archive)
