Heavy Mole is a boss that debuts in Kirby's Adventure. It is a large, golden machine with a single eye, a missile launcher on its backside, and two extendable, mechanical arms with red spiked attachments on the end of each which allow it to dig through the ground with ease. On its back are two spinning turbines and a pair of smoking tailpipes. The missiles it launches are also cycloptic. Heavy Mole's battle strategy is to dig a tunnel using its arms while firing missiles behind itself. The main dangers posed to Kirby by Heavy Mole are the tricky movements of the digging arms and the missiles, though the latter also serve as a means of retaliation, since they can be inhaled.
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

In Kirby's Adventure and its remake, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Heavy Mole appears as the boss of Yogurt Yard, the fifth level in the game, where it is fought underground. This battle is an auto-scrolling one, with the screen following Heavy Mole as it moves through the earth. Kirby needs to take care not to get left behind and risk getting crushed by the scrolling screen making contact with a tunnel surface.
In its boss battle, Heavy Mole digs through the ground using its red spiked attachments, which damage Kirby if he runs into them. Sometimes, when digging up or down, Heavy Mole will launch a red or yellow missile from its backside at Kirby. If Kirby swallows a red missile that has its eye closed, he will gain the Sleep ability; this is inherently dangerous due to the auto-scrolling arena. By swallowing the yellow one with its eye open, however, Kirby will gain the Hammer ability, which can be used to attack the boss or dig through the ground. Defeating Heavy Mole causes it to explode, as well as changing the stage from its arena to a flat, featureless plain.
Kirby's Avalanche[edit]
In Kirby's Avalanche, Heavy Mole is the ninth boss fought (not counting the three "Lesson" bosses only fought in Easy mode). It focuses on destroying blobs quickly, instead of strategically forming chain reactions. Its AI is similar to Zoh Daimaoh from Puyo Puyo, but Heavy Mole does not shake the board.
Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]
In Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Heavy Mole appears as a regular Keychain, under its Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land appearance. Strangely, its sprite does not have the two spinning turbines on it, leaving two holes on its body.
Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]
In Kirby's Dream Buffet, Heavy Mole appears on a Character Treat, re-using its sprite as a keychain from Kirby: Triple Deluxe with the missing turbines.
Trivia[edit]
- According to an internal document created by HAL Laboratory around the time Kirby's Adventure was released, Heavy Mole was convinced to work for King Dedede in exchange for a year's worth of coal.[1]
