- Welcome!
- The WikiProjects Days 2026 was an online event focusing on WikiProjects on Wikidata. WikiProjects are a crucial part of improving data quality and onboarding newcomers to specific areas of Wikidata, and the event was a place for all editors to discover WikiProjects, get involved, and improve the content and tools of your favorite WikiProjects.
- How did it work?
- The event took place online during three days, from June 19 to 21, 2026. You will still be able to watch the replay later on. You will find the schedule below on this page. The sessions took place in English, and were open to everyone interested in Wikidata.

Modelling, crosswalking and creating documentation for natural history holotype specimen items
 I'm intending to introduce the wider Wikidata community to the Wikidata WikiProject Natural History specimen data model, initally a collaboration between myself as the Wikimedian in Residence at the New Zealand Bioeconomy Science Institute and User:Dactylantha from the Auckland War Memorial Museum now including others from & interested in natural history data. How do you find what needs fixing in your WikiProject?
 Many WikiProject maintenance problems can be found in the data, but they are still hard to turn into a useful cleanup list. Often, WikiProject participants need to know the right tools or queries before they can make one. In this session, we want to hear how WikiProject participants currently find and prioritize this work. We will briefly share what we learned when building Broomstick (a tool that tries to solve this problem for lexicographical data). We are interested in knowing whether this approach can extend to other domains, while understanding that each WikiProject would need its own way to define and list the work. The discussion will focus on the question: Does your WikiProject have the same problem, and what would make this kind of tool genuinely useful?  The Wikiproject Ontology is all about the ontology of Wikidata. This should make it the central and most vibrant project of Wikidata. This talk will describe some of the aspects of the Wikidata ontology that need attention and what could be done to improve Wikidata by improving the Wikidata ontology. Building Better Wikidata Integration for the Programs & Events Dashboard
This session will provide the Wikidata community with an update on the progress made on the Program & Events Dashboard by the EduWiki Hub in collaboration with Wiki Education Foundation and Wikimedia Brasil. The presentation will highlight the work already completed, including the advanced search feature, and share the next development priorities focused on strengthening Wikidata integration. A key goal of the session is to gather community input on how the Dashboard can better support Wikidata-related programs, including improved reporting for labels, statements, references, edit types, and item-level statistics. The session aims to support a more useful, community-informed Dashboard that better serves Wikidata projects and education programs across the Wikimedia movement. Wikimedians for Data Organization and Quality User Group
 There are multiple Wikidata Wikiprojects that are related to data organization and quality. These include WikiProject Ontology, There is WikiProject Redundancy, WikiProject Duplicates, WikiProject Data Quality, and WikiProject Conflation. We want to set up a Data Organization and Quality Wikimedia user group to provide a community-lead organization to aid these projects and others in coordination, documentation, education, and design and provide a voice for them to Wikimedia Deutschland and the Wikimedia Foundation. Let's improve a WikiProject page live!
This session will discuss ways that a WikiProject's coordination page may be expanded or adjusted to improve their organization and highlight important aspects of the WikiProject for future users. The example page being improved during this session will be that for WikiProject WordNet (mainly because of the presenter's recent work on that subject on Wikidata). Other participants may bring their own WikiProject pages that they may wish to improve and work on at the same time, and I will be happy to provide suggestions about those. Who is who in marine taxonomy
Taxonomic names of marine species are commonly linked to author names (for example “Linnaeus, 1758”), but these author strings are often ambiguous, incomplete, or disconnected from person records. This limits interoperability between biodiversity databases and Wikidata. The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) is building a large-scale effort to disambiguate all authors of marine species descriptions, starting with marine animals. Our work combines taxonomic data, original species descriptions, and biographical information to identify and reconcile the people behind the species names and authorships. In this talk, we would like to engage the Wikidata community in this effort by:
At a broader scale, Wikidata could be a central hub connecting biodiversity names, publications, institutions, and the people who described life in the oceans. The bug triage hour is an online event where the product managers of Wikidata publicly works on triaging development tasks (typically on Phabricator), improving their descriptions, defining their priority, and collecting the wishes and needs from the Wikidata community. State of the art of tools for WikiProjects: What do we have; what is missing?
 Many WikiProjects are concerned with some domain, i.e., a part Wikidata that is or would be the instances of some class. These WikiProjects generally define requirements or guidelines on how items in the domain are represented, have a phase where new items are added to Wikidata, and create tools or reports that monitor how well items in the domain conform to the requirements. For example, the WikiProject Ships is concerned with watercraft, has requirements and guidelines on how watercraft and watercraft classes are represented, and has a suite of SPARQL queries that report on how well the requirements and guidelines are obeyed. This session will go over some of the tools that WikiProjects can use to support these efforts, concentrating on the lack of tools to enforce the requirements created by WikiProjects. Most of the session will be devoted to a discussion of what tools are missing, how they could work, how to implement, and how to closely integrate such tools with Wikidata. The workshop should end up putting pressure on the Wikidata team to support more and better supported tools for WikiProjects. Prerequisite knowledge: basic knowledge of Wikidata. Takeaways from Wikidata WikiProjects Days 2026: Onboarding New Contributors
This session will focus on discussing issues such as (1) What do newcomers need to know about WikiProjects? (2) What should a good introduction to WikiProjects look like? (3) What resources or guidelines are missing? and summarizing key takeaways related to helping new users contribute to WikiProjects. We hope to identify approximately 3 case studies to showcase effective recruitment, onboarding, skill building, and retention. Effective use of QuickStart Guides in a WikiProject would be a good example of a case study. One goal of the session will be knowledge sharing with takeaways from the session feeding into a 15-minute presentation for WikiConference North America.
