What Does Aayacare Do?

Aayacare is a companion service aimed at making hospital visits less stressful. Their service starts with a pick-and-drop facility that negates the need for elderly people to navigate through traffic themselves or bother with public transport.

At the hospital, Aayacare companions guide patients to the relevant doctors, labs, etc. If required, they offer wheelchair assistance. Once the consultation is over, Aayacare companions will get the medication prescribed and hand them over to the patient as well as take care of any digital payment transactions that need to be made. They even provide refreshments if the patient has to wait for their turn with the doctor/lab.

It is important to note that Aayacare services do not extend to caring for patients at home. If your loved ones need assistance at home, you will need a separate nurse.

While making a booking, you can set your companion preferences for gender, language and vaccination status. All companions are vetted, trained and certified by Aayacare.

Services are currently available in Bangalore with plans underway for expansion to other cities.

The Story Of The Mangalore Tiles

Mangalore tiles are the brainchild of a German missionary named Georg Plebst. He came to India in 1851 as a lay brother in the German-Swiss Basel Mission. Having once been a mechanic, Plebst was put in charge of reforming printing techniques used in the Basel Mission Kannada and Malayalam printing presses.

While Plebst was working on improving the printing press, he also noticed the brittle, porous nature of the local pottery in Mangalore and the existing Nada-Hanchu tiles. He urged the mission to replace the ordinary clay being used in these pottery units with special yellow clay from the Netravati and Gurupura rivers.

The soil from these river beds was collected and tested in Swiss and German laboratories. When Plebst went back to Europe on holiday, he studied techniques used to fire and glaze clay.

He returned to India in 1863 to apply what he had learned to manufacture tiles in India. The original tile design is believed to have been inspired by tile designs patented in France. Later designs are linked to the Marseille tile pattern.

Read: 8 Things To Do On A One Day Mangalore Trip

Mangalorean Tile – Mastering The Art Of Manufacturing

The first sets of Mangalore tiles were produced in December 1865. Plebst worked with an Indian potter known to be an expert in the field to establish the correct combination of sand and clay with a homemade oven. Production started with a mere 360 tiles manufactured each day.

By 1880 bullocks used to power the tile manufacturing ovens were replaced by steam power. Tile production rose to 1 million annually. By now the tiles were so popular that this was not enough to meet the demand for them.

Soon there were many more tile manufacturing units established. Some of the most well-known amongst them included Albuquerque & Sons, Casia and Sujirkar’s Tile works and Rego and Sons. By the 1900s, there were 25 factories producing Mangalore tiles.

How Are Mangalore Tiles Made?

Clay for the Mangalore tiles is collected from river beds, filtered and then put into a mold. Any excess clay is removed and the mold is put in a machine to be given its unique shape and stamped with the factory logo. The shaped tile is then removed from the mold and cured in a kiln.

The tiles get their unique reddish hue from the high percentage of iron in the clay. They may also be sprayed with enamel to be given other colors. When exposed to a high temperature within a kiln, the enamel and clay fuse to form a permanent bond. This ensures that the tiles do not lose their color with time.

What Makes The Mangalore Tiles Special?

The Mangalore tiles have many unique properties that make them stand out. Made from riverbed clay, these tiles have naturally insulating properties and can keep homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

They are also highly resistant to damage from fire. The shape and design of these tiles also allow air to flow through the roof thereby improving ventilation. What’s more, it is eco-friendly, cheap, and sturdy. Many tiles installed on buildings 100 years ago are still intact.

Sulagitti Narasamma – Early Years

Sulagitti Narasamma was born in 1920 in a village called Pavagada in the Tumkur district of Karnataka. She was part of a hilly mountain tribe called Adi Jambava and spoke Telegu as a child. She did not attend school and was married to Anjinappa at the age of 12 years.

What she lacked in formal education, she learned from her community. In particular, her grandmother; Marigemma.

Marigemma was a midwife. She helped Narasamma deliver 5 of her own 12 children and taught her midwifery skills as well. Only 8 of Narasamma’s 12 children survived past the first few years.

Sulagitti Narasamma The Midwife

Narasamma was 20 years old in 1940 when she helped with her aunt’s delivery. The region was bereft of medical facilities and hence, Narasamma had many opportunities to practice her midwifery skills whenever nomadic tribes stopped at the village. She performed over 20,000 natural deliveries free of charge in a span of 70 years.

In addition to helping women deliver their babies, she also learned how to prepare natural medicines for pregnant women and the art of checking on a fetus without modern medical equipment.

She could detect the baby’s pulse while in the womb as well as identify the baby’s position and help women prepare for childbirth accordingly. By her 97th birthday, Narasamma was known as the go-to midwife of Krishnapura.

Narasamma didn’t keep this knowledge to herself. She trained 180 students in midwifery. This included her daughter Jayamma who followed in her mother’s footsteps to become a local midwife.

Awards And Recognition

Sulagitti Narasamma’s work earned her national recognition. In 2012, she was felicitated with the D. Devaraj Urs award by the Karnataka state government. She earned the Kitturu Rani Chennamma award, the National Citizen award of India and the Karnataka Rajyotsava award in the next year.

In 2014, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Tumkur University. In 2018, she was honored with India’s highest civilian award, the Padma Shri.

Death

Narasamma was 98 years old when she passed away as a result of chronic lung disease. She died in Bengaluru’s BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital. Her body was kept at the Glass House in Tumakuru on the 25th of December 2018 for public viewing.

She was laid to rest in Gangasandra village with full state honors on the following day. Several religious and political leaders attended her funeral. Half an acre of land was set aside to build a memorial in the lady’s name.

Read: The Changing Dynamic of Engineering Seats In Karnataka

What is SuperNumerary Quota?

SNQ is a system wherein engineering/polytechnic colleges reserve 5% of their seats over the seat matrix for students from economically poorer sections of society who pay reduced tuition fees. This means if a college has 100 seats, 5 additional seats are made available as SNQ seats bringing the total to 105 seats.

As many as 5,000 seats in government and private aided/unaided colleges are available under this system. In such cases, the government fees are waived and the student needs to pay only a token amount.

SNQ Quota Eligibility

Candidates must meet two main criteria to be eligible for SNQ seats.

Firstly, the student must be a rank holder in the entrance exams. Secondly, his/her family income must be lower than 6 lakhs per annum. The government has created 5 income slabs to prioritize candidates.

Slab Type

Income

Slab 1

<Rs 1 lakh

Slab 2

Rs 1 lakh – 2 lakh

Slab 3

Rs 2 lakh – 3 lakh

Slab 4

Rs 3 lakh – 4.5 lakh

Slab 5

Rs 4.5 lakh – 6 lakh

Students in the lowest income slab will get first priority for the seats followed by the second lowest slab and so on.

Read Karnataka Engineering College Admissions – Government Introduces New Rules

Claiming Or SuperNumerary Quota

Eligible candidates are automatically identified from the merit lists. There is no need to take any additional steps if you meet the eligibility criteria. At the document verification stage, you will need to furnish an income certificate as issued by the jurisdictional Tahasildar to prove your family income status.
