42 years ago today, Mount St. Helens cataclysmically erupted. The event led to 57 deaths, including that of David Johnston, a dedicated scientist, and caused the worst volcanic disaster in the recorded history of the lower 48 states.

The completion of the Transcontinental Railroad is one of the greatest technological achievements of the 19th century. Numerous people and cultures came together to build the railroad, but Chinese laborers bore the brunt of the grueling and dangerous work.
