Has anyone ever quantified the median ratio of 19th c. published recipe word counts to 21st c. blogosphere recipe word counts? I'm guessing 10:1. That's conservative.

Serious Eats: tomatoes. A lot of tomatoes. 28 ounce can + paste (I guess that's what makes it red jambalaya?)

This is the strategy my husband used to win a wife, and I swear it was 100% effective. (Source: American Agriculturist, 1849).

Sarah Josepha Hale, 1854, no tomatoes. American Agriculturist, 1849, no tomatoes. Weirdly, the latter also uses "Hopping Johnny" as an alternative name for jambalaya.

Manual for Army Cooks, 1896, says tomatoes. Lafcadio Hearn, La Cuisine Creole, 1885, says no tomatoes.

Tomatoes or no tomatoes? Can I substitute BC spot prawns, now in season, for crawfish? What’s the best type of rice to use?

FYI it’s historical, handmade ca 1965, and a mere $60 CAD at a local second hand shop.

If I understand Twitter correctly, it’s imperative that I wear this outfit at conferences if I want to be taken seriously as a lady academic.

"Unspeakable : A Life Beyond Sexual Morality has stunned this jury," writes for ' Wallace K. Ferguson Prize. "Cleves risked a great deal in telling this story about intergenerational sex." Read why this risk paid off, here:

Shot in the dark: I'm looking for a 19th-century manuscript cookbook written by Caroline T. Ely that was sold on eBay. I can't find it publicly listed in an archive or library. If anyone knows who bought it can you please ask them to contact me? Retweets welcome.

I guess it serves me right getting hoodwinked by Cather, having recently written a book in which I attempted a similar trick.

A couple examples: one about the joys of solitude in the service of Christ, the other about the love shared between the bishop and his curate. I really can’t imagine a less sympathetic subject than a missionary bishop colonizer, but Cather makes you fall in love with Latour.

Just finished reading Cather’s “Death Comes for the Archbishop” (1927). I found it such a strange read. The beauty of the prose filled me with a sympathy for its colonizing missionizing Catholic priest heroes that is utterly at odds with my actual feelings about this history.
