Strangely the static blog section does not seem to contain either Pelican
http://docs.getpelican.com/en/latest/ or blogofile http://blogofile.com/ both
worthy of checking out. Static blogs make it really easy to deploy the blog
to any web server. Moreover for the limited set of features they offer,
editing in markdown/etc. is quite convenient too.

I think if one really wants a full fledged blog with lots of bells and
whistles, its pretty much a hands down wordpress choice. But for simple
blogs the above might be worthy of consideration. I have moved my own blog
from wordpress to a static blog called octopress. But the language the blog
was written in really did not matter (so long as I could imagine being
competent enough to be able to make minor tweaks in). So I did end up
finding octopress amongst the best blog engines out there (even though its
in ruby).
