Liverpool Ladies 0-3 Arsenal Women

Arsenal Women boosted their hopes of a top-two finish in Women's Super League One with a comfortable victory at third-placed Liverpool Ladies.

The Gunners went ahead after Vivianne Miedema was fouled by Sophie Ingle and saw her penalty saved by Becky Flaherty, but tucked in the rebound.

Dominique Janssen doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time with a brilliant curling strike from 25 yards.

A powerful finish from Lisa Evans completed the scoring on 62 minutes.

The Reds almost took the lead after a quarter of an hour, but Caroline Weir's left-footed strike from 40 yards out cannoned back off the crossbar.

Visiting keeper Sari van Veenendaal saved from Kate Longhurst and Casey Stoney had an effort from close range blocked as Liverpool looked to recover from 3-0 down.

Defeat at Widnes' Select Security Stadium ended Liverpool's four-match winning streak in the league and Arsenal are now just a point behind the Reds, and six off second-placed Chelsea Ladies.

Liverpool Ladies manager Scott Rogers told BBC Radio 5 live Sports Extra:

"I thought the first half was relatively even, and there was a game-changing decision and it was a wrong decision.

"From my opinion it was not a penalty, but I am not the referee and it is for the powers to look at the standard that we have in women's football.

"But you have to take your hat off to Arsenal. They are a very good footballing side and they probably deserved to win as they took their chances and we didn't.

"We had a mountain to climb at half-time and we couldn't climb it."

Arsenal Women manager Joe Montemurro told BBC Radio 5 live Sports Extra:

"I am happy about the way we played and some of the passages of play that we have been instilling in training.

"I've been asked [about the penalty] and I couldn't see from my angle. I'd be lying if I told you it was in or out [of the box] and I'd have to review it again on the video.

"Yes, moments like that can change games but they can also work in the reverse as you focus on those things instead of how you are playing.

"The more pleasing thing is we created a number of chances against a very good team."
