The Witcher: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1
The Witcher

Critics Consensus

The world of The Witcher still only feels half-formed as it gallops onto screens, but Henry Cavill brings brawny charisma to a series teeming with subversive fantasy elements and dark humor.

Critic Reviews for The Witcher Season 1

It is messy, and absurd, but also -- it is fun.

The batshit energy driving a slew of increasingly odd choices makes for a pretty entertaining spectacle.

And although "The Witcher" is more fantasy balderdash, it's also somewhat addictive fantasy balderdash. Bring on the blood-spilling, the orgies, the haunted forests and wizards: It seems we can't get enough.

Who was that character? Which group do they belong to again? What timeline are we in? The whirlwind of scarcely explained backstory turns you into your hopelessly lost parent who just can't seem to figure out how to DVR Criminal Minds.

...if it sounds like that could be fun, you're right. The Witcher has a lighthearted sense of humor.

Dec 20, 2019 | Full Review…

An enjoyable romp with spectacular effects and impressive battle sequences, but as it stands it doesn't have the same grip as some of its fantasy predecessors.

I am fascinated by this show.

Jan 7, 2020 | Full Review…

It effectively introduces a credible and realistic fantasy world, populated by characters who can't be defined as either good or bad. [Full review in Spanish]

Proves very rewarding for audiences willing to invest without preconceived notions on how it should play out.

Jan 7, 2020 | Rating: 8.5/10 | Full Review…

Even with the hardcore fantasy elements and mesmerizing sword fighting, The Witcher feels like both a high stakes fantasy drama and a bit of a western, nailing down the lone ranger trope with Geralt fairly easily.

Jan 7, 2020 | Rating: 8/10 | Full Review…

The Witcher, for all its convoluted inanity, manages to buck expectations of female characters in a TV fantasy series simply by writing them the way men in the genre normally are...

Jan 10, 2020 | Full Review…

Violent medieval monster mayhem is mature fun, has nudity.

Fantastic series! My parents even loved it and they don't watch fantasy shows. Can't wait for the next season! Henry Cavill is the perfect Witcher!

I decided to watch one episode late in the evening, and next thing I knew, it was 7 in the morning. Absolutely loved it, and will probably be reading the books soon as a result. Some aspects of the timeline ordering were a bit confusing, but nothing the average person can't piece together by the 8th episode.

    The show is AMAZING!!!!!!

This series spat in the face of fans of the Witcher, I hope this series will be closed after season 1, and the writer will be fired

Honestly I ignore what access media has to say. They try to belittle the fans and make us think we're stupid. Witcher is an amazing show. It's a little jarring the first episode but you know what, it gets better. So much better. Great job Netflix for getting this produced. Bottom line, don't listen to critics. EVER

The first season of the show is entertaining and fun. It does a good job at adapting the soul of the short stories by Sapkowski and presenting characters. Some changes were on point: adding to Yennefer's origin and making her a bit more likeable, diversifying the cast where possible, and toning down some of the womanizing that we see in the books. Other changes, like cutting Ciri's and Geralt's blind encounters, diminished the emotional depth of the conclusion. The protagonist trio worked nice, although Ciri's questioning, lively and bold personality was turned into a classic princess type. Jaskier (Dandelion) is a gem. Script could be a little more subtle with the constant theme of destiny, leaving a little more meaning in subtext - a flaw in the books that I wish the showrunner had changed, but did not. Regarding production and CGI, the quality of the show is a bit mixed, with very nice production, figurine and CGI in some episodes, cringy in others. I hope that in the second season they have the budget to CGI the eye colors of the three main characters, as they did with Anya Chalotra. These characters say a lot with their eyes and it looks more natural. Overall, a nice fantasy series that I binge watched, and was sad to see ending in 8 episodes. I can see the potential for 5 stars and will definitely watch season 2.

Everything was awesome. The art direction, the performaces, the dialogues, narration... dmn it, even the costume design was awesome. The only issue I see with this serie is that you won't be able to wait for the next season... oh and you will be singing the theme song in your head all the time. Toss a coin to your witcher...

While confusing at some points due to some time jumps, the movie was very fun to watch with an excellent performance by the main lead.

What a piece of crap. The only reason anybody watches or likes the show is out of loyalty to nerd culture. The most common phrase in reviews is: 'Sure it has its flaws'. That is wrong and should be modified to: this show is one big flaw

The Witcher was as fun to watch a second time as it was the first. The story played out very well and well worth catching up on the information gap I had going in to this universe.
