Uganda renews efforts to register social media influencers

The Ugandan authorities have renewed efforts to register online publishers and social media influencers - in a move which critics say is part of an ongoing clampdown on freedom of speech.

The Uganda Communications Commission says those who are profiting from their online posts will now require authorisation letters.

Last year the Ugandan government introduced a controversial social media tax.

Rights groups say the Ugandan government appears to see social media as a threat and wants to monitor and restrict its use.
