The College of Health Solutions offers the following joint accelerated programs designed to enable highly qualified undergraduate majors to earn both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in five years:
- Biomedical Informatics, BS / Biomedical Informatics, MS
- Exercise and Wellness, BS / Exercise and Wellness, MS
- Kinesiology, BS / Clinical Exercise Physiology, MS
Students accepted into these programs share designated 400 and 500-level coursework, allowing the student to complete both degrees more quickly.
Eligibility
Eligibility
To be eligible for admission to a 4+1 program, a student must:
- be a declared major in the undergraduate degree corresponding to the desired masters as the time of application
- have accumulated at least 75 hours toward the undergraduate degree at the time of application; 90 hours are required to begin the program
- have completed at least six credits of upper-division coursework in the major
- have at least a 3.0 cumulative ASU GPA at the time of application
- be on track to graduate with the undergraduate degree two semesters after being accepted into the program (one calendar year later than the acceptance date)
Students who do not meet these criteria may still apply to the MS degree in which they are interested upon graduation with a BS degree.

How to Apply
The application deadline is May 1 of the year prior to participation. Applicants will be notified by email within a week of the application deadline of their admission status. Admitted students must submit an application to Graduate College by June 15 and pay the application fee.
Application Packet
All applications must be submitted to the contact electronically. Each electronic application packet should be sent in one email and include the documents listed below.
Kinesiology, BS / Clinical Exercise Physiology, MS
- Copy of unofficial ASU transcript (3.0 minimum)
- Personal statement (1-2 pages)
- Three (3) letters of recommendation
- Two of the letters must be from faculty members within the College of Health Solutions. The third letter needs to be from Dr. Donna Cataldo.
Exercise and Wellness, BS / Exercise and Wellness, MS
- Copy of unofficial ASU transcript (3.0 minimum)
- Personal statement (1-2 pages)
- Within this statement, identify the faculty member in the major that will serve as the 4+1 advisor. Be sure to request this of the faculty member before identifying them.
- Letters of recommendation
- Three (3) letters of recommendation will be requested when officially applying. Two of the letters must be from faculty members within the College of Health Solutions. The third needs to be from the faculty member that has agreed to be your advisor for the MS program.
Biomedical Informatics, BS / Biomedical Informatics, MS
- Copy of unofficial ASU transcript (3.0 minimum)
- Statement of purpose (1-2 pages)
- Three (3) letters of recommendation from academic sources are preferred.

Program completion expectations
- These programs are designed to be completed in five (5) years total.
- Students are expected to complete their undergraduate degree within one year of acceptance to this program.
- Students not able to complete the undergraduate portion of the degree within four years and the MS degree in one year may not be allowed to remain in the program.
Scholarships, assistantships, insurance and awards
- Some scholarships and awards may be affected by admission to the 4+1 program, as this changes a student status from undergraduate to graduate. Students are advised to check with the specifications of their awards with the ASU financial aid office to see if this will affect compensation packages.
- Students admitted into the 4+1 program are not entitled to teaching assistantships, health insurance, or other graduate awards.
Meetings requirement
- Students admitted to the program will be required to attend two meetings annually with the graduate director of their unit and their designated faculty mentor.
