Alumni named among new Flinn-Brown Fellows

Five School of Public Affairs alumni are among 35 chosen by the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership as part of the 2014 Flinn-Brown Civic Leadership Academy. 

Three alumni among latest Valley Leadership class

College of Public Programs alumni Nicole Almond Anderson, Mary Foote Hebert and Jeff Stapleton were selected to participate in Valley Leadership class 36.  The class is made up of more than 50 small business owners, corporate and nonprofit executives, public officials, and leaders in technology, healthcare, law and education.

“I’m just really excited to be a part of such a great organization,” says Hebert, who received a master’s in public administration from the School of Public Affairs. “They’ve done so much for the community and they’ve helped so many leaders.”

ASU alumna's incubator spurs Phoenix's social entrepreneurs

After graduating from Arizona State University’s School of Community Resources and Development in 2010 with a Master of Nonprofit Studies degree, alumna Courtney Klein set out to increase the odds of success for social entrepreneurs.

“When I was a student entrepreneur, I had a lot of mentors and people who helped me get the organization off the ground,” Klein says. “In 2012 I wanted to help other entrepreneurs have that same experience.”

Social work faculty, alumni elected to NASW board

The Arizona Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers recently announced results of the 2014 board of directors election. Robin Bonifas, associate professor in ASU's School of Social Work was elected treasurer. Steve Bauman, undergraduate student in social work, is the BSW Student Representative. Alumnae Angela Schultz will serve as secretary, and alumni Shannon Rich, Jessica Begay, Victoria Ramirez and Deborah Nelson will serve as branch representatives throughout the state.

ASU alumna advances career in recreational therapy

Not long after she graduated from the School of Community Resources and Development with a concentration in therapeutic recreation in 2010, alumna Aimee Nelson became a full-time employee at the Barrow Neurological Institute in St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center.

School of Social Work outstanding grad to focus on forensic work

The spring 2014 outstanding graduate for the ASU School of Social Work originally intended to major in something else.

“My entire family is in criminal justice,” says Samantha Hill. “I was like ‘might as well major in criminal justice.’”

But during orientation, the Bakersfield, Calif. native met Laura Orr, the student and academic services manager from the School of Social Work. Orr convinced her otherwise.

“I ended up switching to social work before I actually even moved into Taylor Place,” says Hill. “And it's been a wonderful ride ever since.”

ASU seeks Arizona entrepreneurs for accelerator program

5 years later, ASU's class of 2009 reflects on professional success

In May 2009, President Barack Obama addressed more than 9,000 ASU graduates and their families with a mixture of excitement and uncertainty in the air. The students were excited about the moment, but aware of the challenges of entering the workforce in the midst of the country’s economic downturn.

“Many of our current challenges are unprecedented,” Obama said to the crowd of what is still considered one of the nation’s largest-ever commencement ceremonies. “There are no standard remedies or go-to fixes this time around. That is why we are going to need your help.”

Nonprofit Leadership: explore the business of nonprofits

The ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation and ASU Alumni Association are teaming up to explore the business of nonprofits. Panelists include Edmund Hidalgo, president and CEO of Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc., Nora Hannah, CEO of Experience Matters, and Laura Capello, president and CEO, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona. They will present strategies to recruit dedicated volunteers, build a power board, fundraise effectively, and achieve career growth and success.

Alum's social venture spreads international change

In a final hurrah from Arizona State University, new graduate Jeff Malkoon sold as many possessions as he could, packed his bags and traveled to half-dozen Latin American countries for six months. Volunteering with South American nonprofit organization TECHO: Un Techo para mi Pais (Spanish for, “A Roof for my Country”), Malkoon decided to find a way to continue working with the charity once he returned to Phoenix.
